OK, so I own HL1, but the copy is old, from pre-Steam days. I'd just use it in that regular way, install it, Steam knows nothing about HL1. Now, though, the new Steam client is out and I'm not as hostile towards Steam as I used to be, though still not a fan. I'd like to make Steam aware of me...

Try this people, if simply restarting doesn't work. Shut down Steam. Go into your steamapps folder and move all the gcf files (that's right, all 4 gigs) somewhere else. Start Steam and tell it to preload HL2. You'll see 0% completed, and then it will spend some time creating the gcf files...
