Basically the server ground itself to a halt a couple of days ago (I'm not certain what exactly caused it). I managed to finally connect to restart apache and mysql and the site came back up.
At the time I didn't realise that postfix (the email part of the server) had also 'stalled'. The mails...

There's a problem with the box at the moment meaning we're having to get it rebooted fairly often (ie when it breaks). As it's hosted at limelight, we need to get their engineers to do the reboot which takes time.
It may happen a couple more...
Also, yes most of the original staff are british, but with the speed of the intarnets theses days, it doesnt really matter where the server is hosted :D
Valve use 3 nameservers (ns1, ns2, and ns3). It looks like ns1 and 2 were down which was causing any dns lookups for our site to time out.
Valvesoftware.com was working because their dns record has all 3 nameservers in it.
We're currently having a pay dispute with the front page - it's asking for a rise which we feel is ridiculous, so it's had a moan and gone down the pub.

Limelight apologise for the delay, the upgrade meant that everything on the machine needed to be upgraded.
I think the problems with certain characters showing weird (possibly ?) is due to a newer version of apache.

At some point tonight, halflife2.net will be going down for some scheduled server work. I'm expecting it to begin within the next few hours, and the downtime should be less than 3 hours.
