I started getting these maybe two updates ago, and haven't been able to play. It just updated again today, and the game still hangs. I've tried some basic things (verifying cache integrity, deleting clientregistry.blog, deleting the bin folder, and changing the resolution in the launch options)...
I don't miss the over-the-top difficulty, where it seemed difficult just for the sake of being hard. Grinding through those was never rewarding for me; after several dozen tries, I just wanted to get past it and see the rest of the game (and I could regularly beat Contra, Side Arms, Black Tiger...
I thought the different surface types added immensely to the gameplay (which in this case is the solving of the puzzles). Portal may have seemed tougher since it was (presumably) the first time you were set to solving those types of puzzles. By the time Portal 2 came out, you already knew most...
...just throwing this out there: is the power button on the laptop shorted? There are a number of ways that this would present itself that are not what you're experiencing, but at least one of them could be.

So it just occurred to me that this is a Steam game, meaning patches are handled through Steam. This hi-def pack would be huge, many gigabytes perhaps? Are they going to pump that down Steam? I'd be happy to spend a buck on a DVD (or whatever medium would contain it, maybe a flash drive) that...
Haven't played Metro 2033 yet? Definitely worth it.
Has Id actually stated that they're working on a high-def pack, or is that the wishful ranting of the Internet at large?
I replay them all from time to time, but I've been holding off so that when Episode 3 comes out, I'll play them all in order and they won't be as fresh in my mind.
