Yep, another vote for Firebird. Small, quick, has options to turn off those annoying things like windows resizing on you and popups, and tabbed browsing. Roxorization!
And yes Firebird is my favorite browser. I'm going to try out Thunderbird too (their mail/news client. It's very beta right now though.)
So, any cool little things in Gentoo worth emerging for a desktop machine that I wouldn't know about otherwise?
I'm doing:
KDE
GKrellM(+-themes)...
Nah, the last REAL computer was the Acorn A3000. RISC-OS, great GUI before Windows was a twinkle in Bill Gates eye, and you can buy them for $50 on Ebay :)
Yeah, the 256mb cards are also pretty much of waste of time at this stage.. the performance difference from 128mb to 256mb is negligible, if that. I'm going to buy a 9800 and flash it to the 9800 Pro bios.. save myself $120 :)
Finished getting gentoo installed today (gd compiling takes forever) - seems cool so far but I installed it at work and now I'm at home.
Portage rocks though.
Well, fast food COULD be healthy. They choose not to make McDonalds healthy not because it's impossible, but because it's too expensive.
Most dog feces looks and smells just like other dog feces but that doesn't mean it's good quality feces. DDT was deemed safe to spray over people until...
So yeah, I downloaded Gentoo tonight, decided to do the stage2 build as stage1 looks like it'll take forever... haven't finished yet but I'll let you know if I like it ;)
Well, possibly, but anyone who said McDonalds made quality products would quickly sink to the bottom of my ladder of respect.
Now, whether you care to be on my ladder of respect is another issue entirely ;)
Comprehension skills go a long way.
He didn't say it was easier. He didn't say it was more intuitive.
He said it was the best way to have complete control over your system.
But I'm sure you caught that the first time.
Hehe.. I'm glad you had the balls to say that ;)
I don't think your points are without merit. In a world where all the mechanics you know can fix a Ford, why drive a Toyota?
Well, the Toyota runs twice as long, uses half as much gas and goes twice as fast.. but if you don't know how to fix...
Well, that's true to a point.. BUT... if I was a teacher, I'd rather teach my students how to use a computer properly, and not just how to 'get things done'. It's the 'it works, so let's do it' route that's caused half the Internet to lag to hell and back because of Welchia, SoBig, Blaster and...
I guess it isn't, but the dragging/dropping, My Computer stuff - it seems easy beause you know how to do it. If someone didn't know how to use Windows, it's not like that would be an obvious way to do it, or even an intuitive way to do it.
Mandrake, or even *shiver* Lindows is just as easy...
You don't have to, unless you download the source. Most of the 'newbie' linux flavors always have binaries available.
In Debian, you can use 'dselect' to download any software without compiling anything - and it even installs all the softwares depedencies without you having to. Ever had to...
