All I'm saying is that over the past, say, five years that I've been playing PC games and attending messageboards, there's always been talk of some grand upsurge of quality gaming just over the horizon.
Of course, what happens is that some of those titles get cancelled, some postponed and some...
There is nothing wrong with putting forward a particular choice of one game (style) over another and IMO there is room for discussion, even if it concerns what mostly comes down to personal preference - as long as it's kept civil.
I don't enjoy immature flaming and bickering, but this...
Deus Ex sure has it faults and I can agree with some of the criticism levelled at the game in this thread, but Mr.Magnetichead's rants are patently absurd in their extremity.
Then again, perhaps we shouldn't pay so much attention to the opinion of a self-confessed id fan that accuses DX of...
Erm, loofy, didn't Gabe answer your question already: http://hl2.burstfire.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=70512#post70512
Sure, it's not very concrete, but it's still a commitment to partial accuracy.
Yes I did, quite frankly I was amazed to see some people deny the existence of any type of bumpmapping or specularity in the footage released so far.
Perhaps this is a good thing though, the fact that these effects don't scream at us from a blurry filmed off-screen video suggests that Valve...
No, it's actually a good thing to only apply specific graphical effects when needed.
We wouldn't want to end up with a game that looks like Tenebrae Quake or Abducted, now would we?
I don't know, the soldiers in "Traptown" ganged up on Gordon pretty convincingly.
As for them holding their ground in "Bugbait", I don't see too many alternatives.
The soldiers there are already hidden behind obstacles for the most part and when they are attacked by multiple enemies there is...
It's close, but it's not a cutscene per se.
The point of view and 'consciousness' is still that of the player, when the screen goes black it's because the player passes out, not necessarily because it is considered a nice filmic end of cutscene fade.
Control is taken away from the player...
Spiffae,
Those translations should still be available in the 3DR forum where I posted them.
Not much use digging them up though, as they're old news and I didn't finish the second one.
Gojin,
Nope, that's not it.
Lifthz,
Yup, bumpmapping is just one of the tools available to the...
Do you think anyone else would choose such a silly nick?
Kinda ironic you should ask that, as my avatar is somewhat related to your nick.
A couple of clues:
- Laura Palmer's bosom.
- colour is in perpetual state of flux; it is happening again...
- the owls are not what they seem.
I just upgraded from a 19" to a 22" CRT; I used to play @ 1024x768 but I'll try switching to 1280x960 now, hope I can manage that with a playable framerate.
There *is* bumpmapping in the game, although the movies don't show it clearly.
However, when you take a look at the "faces of Alyx" set of screenshots, you'll notice that a bumpmap is applied to the back wall, which is especially noticable in the spot near the table lamp.
Also, the tile...
I didn't know if I should post this or not, but here goes:

According to a 3DR forum regular, his undisclosed source has attempted to shed some light on the issue:
IMO there's a pretty significant difference in visual style, but of course it's not as outspoken as that between either two games and Pikmin 2 or Viewtiful Joe.
What is very important to me about the way HL2 looks is that it contains the "wow", "awe" and "wtf" effects that action games like...
