i love the HL1 intro, i thought of something like this for HL2
first its black. your vision slowly focuses. your in a hospital bed and nurses rush over to your side. fade back to black.
your eyes open again and through an indoor window you can see the doctor talking to the gman :D the...
after you die everything is client side because none of that matters online. when you die your body has no collision so the game doesnt waste bandwidth.

they CANT fix it completely without really high res lightmaps, and that is a big memory drain
every single game released has low res lightmaps :D or most
doom3 wont have that because it has razor sharp shadows from raytracing technology something :D
it will still have some low res light maps
EVERY SINGLE GAME has them right now. doom3 uses completely dynamic lighting, meaning there are no lightmaps, so it wont have it look like that.
Worst case it looks no different than Quake 3.
We do expect to eliminate an existing artifact by the time we ship.
