I know I had enough fun reading about the development of the first Halflife. Valve has links some old magazine articles on it from their links section...
Had a small email conversation with Gabe regarding the knife machine and the knife stump.
Dear Gabe.
What's a knife machine? And what's a knife stump? I really have no
idea...
Why do you ask?

I'm finding it hard to copy and paste this because of the muffed reply tags and indenting, but the emails were like this (If you don't know what I'm asking about, check the links mentioned):
Dear Gabe.

Oh, going on a hunch, here's another place for you l33t haxors to try.

Looks about as ugly as every other inhouse webmail interface I've ever seen :)
What I did was write a python script that could generate all the possible strings of a specified length, and then plop different possible extensions on the end (like .jpf, .pdf)
ie, for two characters, it generated

aa.pdf
aa.doc
aa.gif

ab.pdf
ab.doc
and so on...
Well, I gave up the search for more files. At the rate it was going, it would take more than two months.
However, that was running off my 128kbps connection, on a machine with only a 200mhz processor. If anyone with a faster connection wants to try running the script I made to search for more...
While this thread lay forgotten, I've been plunging around a bit, and discovered two more files in dear old Gabe's directory. I have to say, these are a lot odder than the other knive pictures.
Knife Machine
Knife Stump
Note the dates, these are recent sketches. What for, I have no idea...
Say what? Guessed another directory...

I have no idea what could be in this. Someone else will probably find material in there linked from elsewhere though...
EDIT:
I found something!!

Or we could wait until the next major Windows vulnerability is found (shouldn't be more than a few days wait) and then quickly exploit their Windows 2000 server before they patch!

They run Windows 2000 (surprise), and have been rebooting their server every 10 days or so as of late.
Interestingly, in Nov last year they seem to have moved from one web host to another, who they ditched only in March this...
If you're poking about for hidden sections, http://www.valvesoftware.com/tf2 gets you a forbidden directory listing, that is, there's a directory there, but the server won't list the files in it.
But I guessed at http://www.valvesoftware.com/tf/screenshots , and that's a directory too. Now we...
There's three in the family. Law & Order, Criminal Intent and Special Victims Unit.
I've actually only ever really watched Criminal Intent though, not the other two :).
