Gabe does seem more like a team player, but he has to be, he doesn't seem as self-sufficient as Carmack. Carmack does a ton of coding all by himself, and involves himself deeply in every part of his games/engines developments. Gabe, while I'm sure he has awesome ideas, really does need a team...
Not to de-rail my own thread, but ever think how freaky it's going to be playing games that are 100% photo-realistic? Basically looks like a real killing happening on your screen. Weird...
I don't know if I agree the HL1 engine looks that great. It isn't horrible, but the particle affects and polygon counts are somewhat crude. I still play Counter-Strike though, doesn't look that bad I guess.
I can't think of any games I thought looked really good off hand. I mean, there are no doubt good looking games, but HL2 and Doom 3 are the first ones I really went "Wow, is that a 3D rendereing, or a screenshot.".
Any ideas on how the AI will react if you block their only path? I suppose it will just push past it, like say you throw a Coke machine infront of a hallway. I just don't picture the Combine climbing over it w/ realistic animations. Maybe I'm wrong.
Do you think HL2 will look like crap to us in a few years? I mean games are getting to the point (Mainly D3 and HL2) where they look pretty damn good. I mean I think we can all agree that even though HL1 and Unreal were cool, you could obviously see that they were far from lifelike, even the...
nVidia is going the way of 3dfx, ATi is now the graphics king. Nvidia cheats, lies, and tricks consumers with crooked business practices. On top of that Radeon 9700s are beating GFFX 5900s in benchmarks. Radeon 9800 is faster, looks better, and is one product cycle older.
I know we are all major HL2 junkies, myself included. I also agree based on what id and Valve has released, HL2 looks much more impressive. But I would certainly laugh if they are both released and Doom 3 is much better. It surprises us with lifelike physics, a great story and amazing visuals...
I think for alot of people, the physics will impact their enjoyment a great deal. No, the physics are not the game, however without them, would there be this much buzz and amazement? Not even close. It would be another FPS, only with a powerful franchise behind and and some pretty visuals...
Do you think when you hit an alien blood and guts will get stuck on the crowbar etc? I assume they will retexture it and make it look more real but aside from that, any goodies you think they might do?
