Yes Hectic Glenn you are correct; a steam validation has to take place regardless of whether you get retail or steam versions of the software. Sorry I forgot to add that in.

Retail contains HL2 and CS:S Silver contains HL2, CS:S, HL:S, DOD:S, and all of valve's back catalogue. Which is better bang for your buck? Depends on if you like steam or not. I got Silver myself. Edit: Collector's retail contains all of the silver stuff too methinks, but costs alot more.

It would be nice if they could let us play as soon as hl2 goes gold, after all this is an old game, and isn't necessarily part of hl2, so is it bound to the same terms of sale? Ie: can we play it before hl2 gets to shelves? Sorry if this has been asked already.

It will still be a lot of fun to play with the enhanced physics and ragdoll effects. I can't think of any single player game that has enjoyed the same longevity and positive fan response after this long besides half life (except maybe the original doom series.)
