I have a simillar controller (promise fasttrack 376) and the same sata hd (WD 250 gig Caviar). I had to plug in both WD's cable AND the legacy power cable to get my drive to work. Something about modern motherboards not being able to handle the strain from a harddrive being directly attached...
I bought a 250 gig SATA drive yesterday at Fry's. 7200 RPM, 8 MB buffer, $130 after $30 rebate. Runs great, although its not THAT much faster then my old PATA drives.
sure c++ is, for many things, faster then java. However, some tests with 1.5 have shown java to beat it... I know there was a link on OSnews the other day with java actually pulling ahead of C++ quite a few times.
