So I got my PC. Pretty much as above, but with Kingston RAM and I ditched the 3d stuff as apparently it halves the performance and I wasn't willing to shell out on a second graphics card quite at the moment. Upped the PSU to a 750 watt so I can SLI it later.
I have to say I'm absolutely...
Yeah, I've been doing quite a lot of reading actually. I briefly watched some rugby on a 3D TV at a pub (yes, for some reason they had a 3D TV and sets of glasses laying around) and it was incredible. It could only be even better for games.
This is what I'm looking at now:
Asus P8-P67M...
Yeah I hadn't thought of amazon as a place to get hardware, but doesn't look like a bad shout actually. Hey, I might have to get me some of those 3d glasses aswell...sounds incredible...
Cool, thanks for the advice. I'll probably whack up the RAM a bit then.
I've been looking at benchmarks and stuff, it's amazing how quickly new games run at such high resolutions. Especially as it's only a mid-high end spec PC. Not exactly cutting edge, especially on the graphics.
Cool, so Zalman CPU cooler and swap the PSU for a Corsair. I don't recall power supplies ever being so important back in the day!
Is 4GB of RAM enough?
Ps. Ooh, Deus Ex: Human Revolution looks amazing. The original is still my favourite game of all time. The lack of games like that in...
Oh yeah. Thanks. :)
I was reading you can usually get at least 4.4GHz out of a 2500k without any issue, does this depend greatly on the case and such? I've got practically a mini server case, heavy duty thing and you can lock the front of it if you so choose. I assume it would be good for...
Yeah. I hate crappy small mice, they give me horrible RSI (even though I have small girly hands). And I hate wires. I have an old Logitech G7 at the moment but it's screwed, the buttons stick.
I have a case yeah, I thought I would just take all the old parts out of the current one and flog...
What do we think of this?
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £161.99
Asus GeForce GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £173.99
Gigabyte P67A-D3 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £90.98
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB...
Thanks guys. I'm starting to get a clear picture of what I want - and I'm thinking it definitely includes a Sandybridge 2500k and a GeForce 560.
Also, I didn't realise monitors were all widescreen these days. Shows how much I keep up with the times!
Even with the crash, you must still be significantly better off than before if you've been investing over a period of 30 years, purely due to inflation.
No, not really. I think it's a bit premature to say I'm successful now to be fair, although I'm sure I will be because I am very dedicated...
Well there's a bunch of good reasons, but they're more to do with supply and demand than anything else. Engineers and technical people by nature are generally pretty conservative, they don't like to move around too often, are attracted to security and stability, and aren't very good at...
I see why you say that, but I disagree. You could fail due to reasons totally irrelevant to how good you are at your job, that's true. But that's why you ALSO have to learn how to play the game. When you cut right down to it, career success essentially depends on your ability to influence...
I agree completely. If I ran my own business, I would have performance-related pay for everyone, with your wages being directly proportional to the outcomes achieved against the specific performance goals of the job. Those who consistently over-performed would be rewarded significantly and...
I wasn't referring to the recent economic meltdown actually, I just meant in general. Mediterranean countries have never exactly been powerhouse economies. Not unless you go back to ancient times anyway. The same accusation could be levelled at a lot of second world countries to be fair. Of...
I'm not saying it's just a case of working harder, although that's certainly a large part of it. I don't think anyone without a strong work ethic can ever be truly successful, regardless of their standing in life. I'm also convinced that the lack of a strong work ethic is the main reason why...
Are the Intels that much better nowadays? If so, defo worth spending the extra money. It's not a lot in the grand scheme of things.
I remember for years Intel were a lot more expensive than AMD but the performance wasn't really any better.
Circumstance doesn't trap people into eternal poverty, unless they're mentally ill or have something else quite wrong with them. Even then, usually there's a good support system in place for that kind of thing.
Yes, circumstance makes life a lot easier for some people than for others. That's...
When I think about it, I'm not really sure how it's possible for genuine free will to exist. Surely if we're faced with the same exact set of circumstances, at the exact same time in our lives, then we'll react in exactly the same way each time. If that wasn't the case then our reaction would...
