Gabe & Erik Appear on Episode 1 of Geoff Keighley Podcast, Gameslice

Well, considering how development in Valve goes - if papers on physics were presented this year, the initial development had probably started somewhere around 2010-2012, give or take. More over, they are probably reusing some old shelved code here and there - so it could be that HL3 references...

Gabe & Erik Appear on Episode 1 of Geoff Keighley Podcast, Gameslice

Or: C) There was some HL-related prototype going on, but it was scratched a long time ago, and the team moved on to other projects. Only small chunks of initialization code remained in DLLs.

Gabe & Erik Appear on Episode 1 of Geoff Keighley Podcast, Gameslice

It's officially over, guys. That was his the most polite way to say there will be no HL3 at all. Feels good to finally know it for sure.

Is there anything for a person like me to be excited about Valve wise?

I agree they were passionate about games in early 2000s, when they were still relying on games for a living. But then Steam took off, and they simply shifted their focus. Delays and ****ups happen all the time in gamedev, Valve are hardly exceptional in this regard. I'm ok with them being a...

Is there anything for a person like me to be excited about Valve wise?

Well, to remain competitive obviously. To address new hardware architectures, art pipelines, etc. Deferred rendering and PBR for example require a great deal of code refactoring. When these things keep adding up, at some point it becomes more feasible to rewrite engine from scratch than to keep...

Is there anything for a person like me to be excited about Valve wise?

Valve is a huge corporation, not some visionary indigo society blessed by jesus, lol. They don't give a flying **** about new IP or a new groundbraking tech, they're just watching where the market is going and keep following it, making quick money on emerging tech. 2002: DirectX 9 hits the...

Images from the "Not Portal 3" Source 2 Tech Test

Seems like those images were taken from pre-alpha build, since the video demonstrates much better lighting, postprocessing, PBR, etc. These images basically show just detailed meshes in tweaked Source 1 lighting.

    Crytek makes bold claim!

Algorithmically it's nothing new, but only recently computers became powerful enough to support this stuff with good framerates.

    Underwhelmed by Valve at GDC

They're fine, it's just the transition to moba and f2p that is probably disappointing you. It's all there folks - we have the whole new generation of PC gamers associating Valve with Dota and not with HL series. And Dota is really huge - I would say it's much bigger than HL2 ever was at it's...

    GDC 2015 Valve Conference: 3rd Month, 3rd Day, 3 O'Clock

The three thirds aren't exactly a coincidence, executives at valve Valve have deliberately picked up this exact time to further propagate the long running joke. But I doubt it's any kind of hint or something. Just general PR awareness trick.

Report: Steam Controller is Going to Production

It's obvious from the overall progress of controller development. It started as a buttonless controller with haptic feedback, praised for its bold and innovative design. The team was proud of its accomplishment. Then focus groups gathered in, and it all ended as a classic xbox thing with...

Report: Steam Controller is Going to Production

So they tried to innovate with input mechanics, but their testing groups refused to use anything but xbox controller. This generation is doomed. D-o-o-m-e-d.

    Blizzard to release TF2 rip-off

Regarding 'girlfriends of nerds' - I was talking about that last female healer character who would perfectly suit them. It's a common practice in mmos/mobas to introduce your GF to the game only to make her your support / healer.

    Blizzard to release TF2 rip-off

Well, lets admit it, Blizz went really imaginative with this one. The trailer reveals that psychological portraits of their potential playerbase are well researched by them - you can see there is a class almost for everyone: extroverts, introvers, bullies, lone wolfs, party folks, girlfriends of...

    Half-Life 3 Non-Linear or Online... ?

If I was running HL3 development, I would try to make it the best of both worlds. In singleplayer Gordon Freeman would go on an epic journey across multiple key locations, but in straightforward linear fashion with very limited and controlled openness. In multiplayer the player could join the...

    Source 2 Benefits?

Of course that was just an illustration of the concept. I do not possess a full Source 2 toolset yet. :) Well, denser navigation graphs and more advanced behaviour trees are expected of course.

    Source 2 Benefits?

Yep, since they're retiring DX9 and going full DX11+ this time (and appropriate OpenGL + OpenCL for Linux/Mac), they can build the entire engine pipeline around geometry shaders and compute shaders, and those are very capable of producing procedural geometry, morphs, spacial masks, etc, as Dota...

    Source 2 Benefits?

Look at Dota 2 map creating process and think about all the possibilities Source 2 can provide for first person shooters and alikes. Imagine, you have a standard HL2 asset - a wire fence block. And you want to produce its derivatives - a torn fence, a broken fence, a burned fence, etc...
