As far as I know, nobody has licensed the Unreal 3 engine since it's still being actively developed. Between Doom 3 and Source, however, I think Source has been licensed by more developers.
This would have been great if they had been released, say, before Half-Life 2. Now? They're novel, but seeing those environments in-game in full motion and real-time 3D is far more impressive.
VAC2 went live weeks ago. They've just stopped making announcements about it as they said they would (no point alerting the hackers that their fun is about to end).
Looks fantastic! But why does it seem like everybody and his brother is making a multiplayer mod? How about some love for us single player afficionados?
I believe the red AUX bar is a symptom of early warez copies of Half-Life 2 (among other problems of varying significance, some of which made the game unplayable).
If anything, Vivendi paid Valve to make this thing go away. You don't end up as big a loser as Vivendi and walk away with a fat out-of-court settlement in your pocket. Basically, this settlement is VUG's way of saying, "We don't have a case and we know it." Trust me, Vivendi got the six-inch...
Now maybe all the naysayers will finally shut the hell up about Half-Life 2 being a second rate graphics engine, because Valve just kicked the shit out of Doom 3!
Last time Valve mentioned VAC2 (about a month ago), they said that was the last they would say about it. They don't want to give anybody advanced warning when it's turned on, but you'll know when it's activated because the forums will be flooded with people bitching about being banned from...
Yes, a couple of weeks ago, Valve announced that they would start implementing VAC and that that would be the last announcement. If you check your profile through Steam, you should see something like "VAC status: In Good Standing" or some such.
Everything I've read has led me to believe that it will be sold exclusively through Steam. Fine by me. I bought Half-Life 2 through Steam and haven't had a lick of trouble.
