My ATI card overheats at factory settings too.
Search google for "atitool" and use that to lower your core clock a little. I should probably send my card back, but they'll only repair it. And I'm not waiting 6 weeks for a replacement.
Atitool does the job for me.
Thanks for the tips, but I don't play any steam games. And i've been surprisingly patient with it... I started preloading on Tuesday morning (UK) and it got to about 60% ish within an hour or so. Since Tuesday morning i've been trying it on and off every hour or so (except when i'm sleeping)...
Ok, i'm really confused here... my CS:S won't go past 76% :(
I've restarted steam so many times i've lost count... i've tried deleting the clientregistry.blob file... but nothing
When i start it, i get a little flurry of activity. Then dead.
Dead, dead, dead... any idea what's going on?
Amen ;)
Although secretly I hope it won't be available to everyone. All the more bandwidth for me! Muhahahahaha!
slightly off-topic: does anyone know why my CS:S stops at 76% and refuses to go any further? :'(
Call me names. No please, that helps your case. And there you go again, "valve has said nothing so we MUST all be able to download it!". Sorry, that IS speculation. I could equally say "valve has said nothing so we MUST NOT all be able to download it".
You seem unable to grasp this stunningly...
Oh, i'm sorry!
Somehow i got the impression you "claimed to know for sure"...
Oh wait! There it is!
ps. I know i don't know shit either.
I wrote that :P
MrD wins. End of friendly debate.

The bottom line is you don't know sh*t.
Stop telling people to assume you're right. I don't know. You don't know. End of story. If there's any bottom line, it is: don't get your hopes up because there is no guarantee either way.
I like the way you just assume it's possible because...
All you folks that think you don't need to either a) buy via steam, or b) have an ATI voucher are probably in for a shock. To the best of my knowledge there has been no official announcement either way. And, if I were gabe, i sure as hell wouldn't be letting every man and his dog download it. If...
Yup the "hazy effect" on that tree is HDR in all it's glory. Dunno what people are on about refractions, reflections and whatnot. Sure HDR works with all that stuff, but it's principally about very bright light "bleeding" into surrounding objects. The tree is a perfect example. Look at the...
You should look at the lighting in the Unreal Engine 3.0 technology demo. They started talking about high-resolution and low-resolution shadow maps, and interpolating between them. Interesting stuff. And bl**dy good looking!
Of course, there's more to games than graphics :)
