1280x1024 isn't 4:3 aspect ratio

This is kind of a multi-threaded question so please forgive the length of the post.

My trusty old analogue monitor doesn't support 1280x1024 at high enough refresh rates to prevent flicker, but at 1280x960 it can just about cope at 75Hz.

With HL2 not yet available, and all benchmarking previews testing at 1024x768 and 1280x1024 resolutions, I have no idea whether HL2 will support 1280x960. Rather than trouble Mr. Newell with my query I thought I might get some opinions from here first.

Having not played many recent games I was wondering if 1280x960 is often given as an option in video settings - this might give me an indication as to whether HL2 will provide the same support.

This kinda leads on to another point: 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x960 and 1600x1200 are all 4:3 aspect ratios - but 1280x1024 is not. Does this mean that when games are run at this (5:4 aspect) resolution the image is squished?! Or are the 'pixels' of the monitor considered non-square by the game engine? Given the popularity of 1280x1024 in commercial LCD panels I'd really like to know.

Thanks in advance to all who reply.
