15 000/20 000 caratcher limit

Why does it even exists?

A lot of times I try to post articles that I have to split into parts. I don't understand, what's the point ? Spam usually is small and dumb.

At least increase it to something like 40 000 or 50 000 caratchers ?

I guess we could think about that one. However, people do generally get bored quickly when reading an article as a forum post. You may prefer to type it up as a Word .doc or upload it somewhere so people can view it at their leisure.

Obviously we'd have to activate the uploading of .doc files for this to work though.

Starmonkey will probably see this later so he can make the decision on the character limit. Unless it's a technical limitation, I can't see any reason why not.

If its something interesting then 50,000 characters is ok. But I think things that big are rare for forums, usually only really seen on mod private forums or maybe the odd tutorial now and then. Political stuff at that length is dull, but then its dull at any length heh

Yeah, I have no idea why that limit is there. Maybe it's because the forums slow down alot if there are a crazy amount of very long posts around? or something like that.

But if possible it would be cool if it was lenghtend. It is kinda annoying to read long posts in several sections...

Yeah, making .docs allowed would be great, but they're usually quite big anyway.

I agree that most people get bored, that's exactly the point, it's to get an intelligent debate that I usually post articles, shove off the rest.

I find it harder to read large blocks of text in these forums. Its because of formatting, font, and color issues that make it difficult for me. I will be more likely to read it if you just post a link to it and quote several key points that you think is important.

I quite enjoy reading the long posts becauseit means i don't have to dart between websites my comp can't load too fast or worse still havethe article broken up with people's comments. Lose the limit for off topic and give it a trial i say.

I asked for a 50 000 limit, not no limit.

It's 15000 at the moment and is used to keep the page length smaller (ie if someone chooses to show 20 posts per page, there is a theoretical maximum page length). We don't really want to force people to scroll down incredibly far to do things like quick reply etc.. so it's best to break up longer posts.

That's just my thoughts on it.

Just a little bit more, like 25000 or 30 000 for the opening posts wouldn't do much harm, would it ?

And I wonder why the limit for the normal posts is bigger than for the opening posts.
