16 bit color

Will HL2 support 16-bit color modes? I find the 60% framerate hit of 32-bit color modes hard to justify since I can barely ever (if ever) tell the difference between 16-bit and 32-bit graphics modes. And believe me, I've tried. So I'd rather play at 1600x1200 16-bit at good framerates than 1280x1024 32-bit at mediocre framerates.

I'm pretty sure the framerate hit on the new cards is very very small...unless you are running on a TNT2 i don't see any reason to NOT run in 32bit color...plus ATI doesn't even support AA in 16bit....

Thanks. Just making sure. I'm no noob, but I've seen some recent games that don't even allow you to toggle 16-bit and 32-bit, and it pisses me off. Anger. Rage. I'm done.

GF4 Ti4400. No matter what card is used I usually see a hit. Post some benchmarks to the contrary, if you have em, I'd be curious to see some proof.

i guess i haven't used 16bit since the TNT2 days... I don't have any proof... i do know for a fact that ATI doesn't support AA in 16bit color... That is the reason you have to type -32bbp in the command line for halflife to play with AA on...

I guess is just haven't played around with it...but im pretty sure there is very little hit on the newer cards...

its true... newer graphics cards, and newer games get a very small performance increase by moving to 16bit color.. mostly because they are tweaked to run in 32bit color.

in the tnt days your framerate would get halved if you tried 32 bit

BTW, wohoo i'm a Zombie !! *checks out Title*

I see little to no difference running 16bit over 32bit with my Radeon 9800.

However, the difference with my Voodoo 3 was phenomenal. Thank God those days are gone. ;)

We got a 4 line MAX rule with signs...and your sign is 13 lines, so please change it.

In some games, the difference is extremely obvious. You can usually see it as dithering in smoke, etc.

Voodoo 3's only supported 16 bit color.

Edit: Although if I think about it, I think they did have some sort of pseudo 32 bit mode where it compressed 32 bit color to a form it could use, I don't remember exactly.

But honestly, I never noticed a difference between 16 bit and 32 bit quaek 3 when I change from a voodoo 3 to a geforce 3 ti 500.
