1983: The Brink of Apocalypse

An hour and fifteen is too long - didn't watch the whole thing. I remember this time though - they fed this sort of drivel to us in school. I was in elementary school, and they'd show us movies like "The Day After" and we'd all get scared. Seriously, what were they trying to do showing that to fifth graders? At least in the '50s they thought they'd survive in tin shacks and hiding under desks. I remember walking home and I heard a sonic boom, and for about twenty minutes I raced home, scared shitless and crying, waiting for the nuclear flash to roast me before I made it, until I realized it wasn't a bomb.

Not f*king cool.

I watched the entire thing, and it's just an amazing history lesson. I love reading about this time, since it was about when I was born...so there was nothing I could have done to save myself.

Fkn war.

DOWN WITH NUKES, DOWN WITH WAR, DOWN WITH PENCILS

wait wut.

I also want to know how exactly we're getting rid of all these nuclear weapons. cancer seems to be on the rise and one can only speculate nukes are hard to dispose of.

we should save them for asteroid deterring.

actually I think setting up some kinda nuke mine field in space would be even better. that way any large asteroids heading towards us can be automatically destroyed and we could sleep soundly.

Watched the whole thing. I never studied the cold war much before, so it was a great watch. Thanks for posting!

This isn't Armageddon

hey is this the time where a soviet computer malfunctioned showing as if the US launched nukes, but a nobody private decided it might be just a glitch and saved human kind?

i doubt there is anyone who ever lived on earth that deserves more praise than that man! and i mean that in the most serious way!

it was high altitude clouds that registered as missles being launched but the man held his own and after the incident he got removed from the military. the man literally saved the planet from destruction

talk about gratitude.

You love it simply because some government people are doing things that the general population doesn't know about, don't you?

Well.... yes. :p

Actually, I love those kinds of documentaries, the ones that make you feel lucky to be alive.

And this one makes me want to serve in 'Endless' (Korean Strategic Missile Command) - even though we have no nukes and only chemical weapons.

Hey, it wasn't from a lack of skill. We just decided that there were too many nukes in the world.

And that relations with the US might not be so BFF after we made them.

That was an interesting watch. I'd like to see more like that.

I remember hearing about the guy at 28:30.

Utterly incredible. This man prevented the world from nuclear war and lost his job over it. How fortunate we are that this level headed mind was in such a position of power.

Shortly thereafter, there's a quote by an individual that sums up a lot of this. I can't recite it word by word, but it states that the most terrifying thing about all of this, was the misunderstanding of the intentions of the USA and the Russians. Both sides were so suspicious and misunderstanding of the other, it nearly pushed the world to war.

Oh, and kudos to your Britts with your spies. Seems like you guys are usually given credit to having some of the very best and this puts it into better perspective why.

*The individual cited for making the statement about suspicion and fears and both ends was Robert M Gates, the current secretary of defense for the United States.

This video also gave a better insight on how Reagan was feeling about this and revealed that he was not a war mongering man. His concern for life was great as showed through his journal entries despite what others may think.

Somewhat interesting,

Concerning, Oleg Gordievsky, the double agent for the British, originally born in Russia:

Suspected poisoning

On November 2, 2007, Gordievsky was taken by ambulance from his home in Surrey to a local hospital, where he spent 34 hours unconscious. He is still partially paralysed. He claimed that he had been poisoned in an assassination attempt, saying he had obtained tablets of what he believed to be the sedative Xanax from abroad with the assistance of an unnamed Russian. He said he took tablets on October 31. He told The Mail on Sunday that he was certain he had been targeted by the KGB (its successors), and that the pills were almost certainly tainted

the part showing the many alarms from the satellite was unnerving.
