2.4Ghz Laptop No Textures

I love half life 2. It wasn't until I got my HEV suit and hit the F key on and off did I see actual textures on the characters and interactive objects. They were all just black sillouettes until I got to the lab and got the suit. Didn't play half life so I thought that was part of the game. Anyone else?

Everytime a new area loads I have to hit the F key on and off before the textures appear. In the scene near the end (won't spoil) when characters are together and I can not activate the F key. Everything is black filed siloutte. Help.

Bad specs you gave us. 2.4 Ghz laptop gives me nothing to go on.

I can give you the advice to,
1. Check for spyware (Prob not the problem)
2. Defrag (Still prob. not the problem but you should do it anyway)
3. Get new drivers for your card
4. When you've done the above (Remember to uninstall the old carddrivers first), install DirectX 9.0c ontop of it, even if you already have it.

Wow... you played the game with NO textures???????? I wonder how that worked out...

To Garric:

I played the game WITH Textures....but only when I got to use the F key (Flashlight) to turn it on textures displayed then off and textures stayed. It only went back to black silouettes at the begining until I got the F key choice and when each new area loaded.

my system is a 2.4 Ghz 512megs and a built in Mobility Radeon 7500 with 32 MB and a display mode of 1400x1050 16bit (60hz)

It can't be my display because I can see the textures just fine ONLY AFTER hitting the flashlight key.
When the game loads the title Half life 2 and the load game new game etc are just complete black fonts...but the background pictures are their.

Is there a setting that I can change or is this a bug? I bought the Halflife 2 - retail CD that included the bonus Counterstrike force.

What resolution are you running the game in? What detail level for the textures? Have you tried lowering/raising it?

Go to Options > Video > Advanced... What do you have Texture Detail set as?

Whatever it is, crank it down to minimum and see if it makes a difference. If it does then it's your graphics card not being able to handle it properly.

Thanks Chris I'll give that a try...but like I said the textures are their when I toggle F on and off. You might be right though as the characters don't have eye textures...which is kind of freaky.

Sigh. Tried what you suggested but same issues in all rez and low medium etc.

Oh well. I can still play it...just that it looks crappy when all titles are black and have to click on the f key to see stuff

Hey vanlen,

I have the same video card on my Dell laptop. I was frustrated, too. I fixed it by going to the following link:

http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/

I downloaded this program called the DH Mod tool V2.1. This allows the ATI catalyst to be installed on your system. I don't know much about this stuff.. but it worked for me. Just select your card from the drop-down list when you run the program. Please let me know if it works for you.

Your solution worked!!!!

I've never seen this game look so good. The characters now have eyes and I don't have to keep turning on and off the Flashlight to get my textures.

The only drawback is that my screen rez doesn't go up to 1450 x anymore and the text doesn't look as crisp as before...but the HL2 looks awesome.
