1stly i stilll have the problem with hl automatically quiting wen i get 2 a certain place (see "need help.bad" plz:). but now i have a new problem. i changed the resolution 2 the highest there. 1789by1567 or something. it ses it restarts wen u change the vidio settings. it restarted, i quickly saw a section of the splash screen and it goes back 2 desktop with no error massage or enything. just the g-man starring at me :(. it happens wen i run it 2. i tried changing my res to the same 1789by1567 or whateva it is but it still didn't work. plz help me :(:(:(:(

1789 by 1567 isn't a native resolution. Either the game doesn't support it, your video card doesn't support it, or your monitor doesn't support it.

These are the native resolutions for a typical montior

640 by 480
800 by 600
1024 by 768
1280 by 960 (though most people use 1024 which is still acceptable)
1600 by 1200 (some monitors do not support this resolution)
2048 by 1536 (very few graphics cards, monitors and games support this resolution)

Try one of those resolutions and see if it solves your problem.

I played it on 1600x1200 (just because I could, it really doesn't look any different than 1024x768), and everytime I loaded HL through steam for the first time, I would get a 600x400 version in a corner, everything else was black. I would quit HL (not steam) and reload the game, and it would work.

i cant open the game so i cant change the resolution back! u rnt helping at all.

uninstall it, then reinstall it. If that doesn't work, check to make sure your video card drivers are up to date. That's usually the case

how do i uninstall it? do i have to dowload it again cos thats not an option!

*sigh* i guess you have very little knowledge.

Your problem with Halflife can be solved if you simply uninstall it, by going into the control panel and clicking add/ remove programs...and remove HL...then put your HL disc in (cos you bought the game didnt you...didnt you!?!?!) and reinstall.
When you say ' downloading it again is not an option' i think its quite foolish to point out you downloaded your HL...lol

um i downloaded it on steam. wot are u talking about foolish?

ah fine...steam downloaded makes it clear. Well if you dont have a disc then i think that removing it will mean you'll have to download it again, im not sure at all, im sure someone else knows...*waits* anyone?

You mean "I downloaded it on steam, what are you talking about, am I the fool you refer to?"

Can't you just change the resolution in a config file somewhere instead ?

config.cfg somewhere in you steam/hl folder or something.. Look around a bit, I think you could sort it out that way, instead of downloading it again..

Lucky my comp supports it all.

My old GeForce MX 200/400 ran 2048 1536 long enough for me to see about 5 frames of DoD. The load up became to much so my comp froze. I haven't tested with my new (at least 50% increase in performance) comp though.

My monitor's about a year old, and it *owns*. I can run it at 100 HZ if I wish (I tried it before, but I'd rather save it a bit and run it at 85 hz).

Umm... It usually resets to software mod if your comp refuses to load the "higher graphic". But yes, it should be in some config file.

i looked for a config thing and found only one but it had nothing about resolution in it:(. shouldi send an email 2 valve or something?

If you're getting shot back to desktop after joining a game, I suggest you go download memtest86 and test your ram..

Aren't there command line switches, such as -height - width -bpp, like in Quake?
If so use steam to create a shortcut, edit it to have these params and there you go...
If not then, errr, remove it and re-download I guess...
