Be - the broadband ISP that doesn't have any punters yet - has confirmed that its 24 meg service will cost less than £30 a month.

The broadband service from the local loop unbundling (LLU) operator is due to launch in London in the next couple of months once Be has installed its kit in 45 BT exchanges.

So far the LLU operator has declined to say how much its 24 meg service will cost. It's still keeping the price "under wraps" although a spokesman told us it would be "under £30".

The Register understands that the service - which is not thought to include caps or usage limits - could even be nearer £25 a month.

Earlier today Be announced plans to give all its punters a "Be Box" wireless router for free (actually, it's Thomson SpeedTouch 716g wireless router that normally retails for £116.99).

Three weeks ago Alcatel announced it had won a "multi-million Euro contract" to supply LLU kit to Be.

The SpeedTouch 716 and 716g gateway routers provide standard broadband ADSL connectivity using USB, Ethernet and Wireless* and additionally support for voice over IP functions suitable for the home and office.

Both the SpeedTouch 716 and 716g, support ADSL2/ADSL2+ and are backward compatible to ADSL ensuring future use with high speed ADSL2+ based services once available.

Awsome news for UK people. 24mbit at the end of this year and cost less than £30 :D

If all this info is true then Be will singlehandedly pwn every single UK ISP with the advent of this. There is no reason not to sign up with them.

If it's £25 a month that would make it almost 50x faster than my 512kbps at only a tenner more, PLUS the fact that is has no download limits and my package does. I just hope it's available to me...

Customer service and reliability are other factors to be considered, of course...

Wow.

Don't really care too much right now of course- it's ironic, because even though broadband's been available in my area for about a month now I'm still on dial-up, as I can't find an offer I'm happy with. £30 24mb connection mind, woo, I'd go for that...

Where is it available.. thats the thing..

I'm with BT atm, they just recently upgraded me to 1mb.

But I still think they can kiss my ass goodbye the moment I find a different company.

Why? Because they imposed download limits, which imediately were reached... so now I have broadband slower than 150k. Which is obcene for the price I pay of £26 a month.

Wankers, I can't even play games. (yeah i'm pissed off!)

:O

I'm so badly getting this if it's avaliable in my region.

The words "you get what you pay for" are ringing around in my ears though :(

I m signing up with www.UKONLINE.net this friday for 8mbit @ £29.99 with 0.5TByte download limit. Moreover, UKONLINE going to offer 24mbit from feb 2006. :D for the same price £29.99.

LOL, thanks but I m not a member yet

This will be one of those things that'll be available in London but in no other areas. Lame. Only the bigger companies have the money to cover most of the UK.

Yeah, but you soon will be :P

I'll pm you or something if I decide to sign up. :)

No problem. As soon as my connection move to their service, I'll let you know.

Yeah, which sucks :(.

Is this Wireless or vdsl?

edit: just realised it is dsl, but with a wireless router :s.

D'oh, that UK Online lot seemed so promising, and then I realise that, unsurprisingly, I'm not in the 18% of the populace that can get their best offers :(

Damn you BT! Monopolistics gits with their shoddy service...

how much of a hassle is it switching isps?

Considing the best you can get in the UK is 3mb for about 50 quid, it doesnt matter how much hassle it is. If this turns up in my area and my mum (Its her house, thus her phone lines) dont let me do it, Im going to move out.

Looks like this 'Local Loop Unbundling' is only available with a BT telephone line.

That sucks, im with ntl, which has good telephone service but crappy broadband.

I just recently got BT's 2 Mbps package with the 30Gb download limit with no troubles so far.

That package costs £30 a month (the same price as their old 576Kbps package).

This might be worth checking out though, hopefully it turns out not to be a con or anything.

Jesus Titty-****ing christ on a bicycle. And I thought I was proud of my new broadband. :O

Yeah, I will get 25 Mbit next month. Although that's ADSL, not broadband.

Well that's amazingly good and all, but it took me about sixth months to persuade the rents to get broadband, even when I offered to pay :P God knows how much nagging it'll take to get 'em to get this, even if it's the same price - they can be stubborn ;)
