MY RIH: 2600+ Barton, 9800 Pro 128MB, 512MC PC400 HyperX

Should I upgrade RAM or CPU? The thig is, in CS:S I get really nice framerates 80 percent of the time. But sometimes, when there are explosion involving physics or 15 people in a room, things slow down to like 28 fps. To me, this is unacceptable. Should I buy more ram, CPU, possibly vid card? thx for the input :naughty:

have you tried overclocking your FSB as the 2600+ barton is more than capable of 3200+ speeds. Your ram could do that easily also...

I've heard about that, but I don't know about the correct cooling methods and whatnot? Could you possibly advise me? Oh, and I don't know if I can over clock on my mobo -http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-150-045&depa=1

upgrade your RAM. people say that the CPU is main priority....aahahaha...yeah to some extent when you have a rubbish cpu, say, a 2000+. ive got the exact set up as you, but i upgraded my RAM after playing doom 3. loading times increased unbelievebly and i didnt have ONE slow down at all that i can say was annoying, or affected the gameplay.

anyway RAM would be best, and yeah you can also o/c your cpu, as i got mine to run at 3200+, but it started getting slightly unstable (eg not finding files etc). mine is now back as standard. i get around 80-120fps on cs:s at 1024, 4xAA and 2xAF with max settings. RAM would be the better, and cheaper, choice mate :E

Which ram would be appropriate? You see, I have PC4000 Kingston HyperX. REALLY expensive RAM. Like $170 a stick of 512MB. I got it on sale for $80. Should I just get some cheap PC3200 or something?
Oh, and for your 2600+ Barton, did you change the heatsink? Lol, I'm a newb at all this. How do I OC? What do I change? DO iI DL prgrms?
AT CS:S I have same settings as you LOL except 16xAF, I get 60.25 fps on the stress test, an average of 45 in game, with MAJOR physics slowdowns. It's cool that we have the same comp lol.
BTW, I have a Shuttle AN35N-Ultra... do you think it would be appropriate for overclocking?

thx for the hlp ;)

Agreed

512MB PC3200 CL2 or c.5 (Check the timings yours runs at using CPUID)

Should be fine.

You will still have a little bit of slow down when a lot of objects move with physics at times, everyone does.

thx for the help. What kinda cooling do I need for Oc'ing? Also, any reccomendations for ram? Thx bro

that 512mb kingston stick is more than enough for hl2.

Thx but SHOULD I GET A NEW HEATSINK TO OC MY CPU OR GET MORE COOLING?

id get a new heatsink, if i dont get a amd 64 3200, im getting a really nice heatsink and ocing the hell out of my pentium 4
