So I'm pretty shitty at drawing and I like drawings and I mostly like quick sketches people do, opposed to full on portraits and scenes and pictures (I like the sketchy look of a quick done sketch where you can see tracing lines still, rather then the pics where it's in full colour and all detailed).. So I decided to just go out buy a pack of pencils, sharpener and a sketch book and I figure if I fill a page with doodles and sketches every single day I should get good at drawing... I have never drawn in my life (aside from stick figures) and this is Day 1... Obviously some are just random and don't really count towards any skill, but you can tell which is which..

What this thread is for is to ask any good drawers: Is it even worth my time? All my drawings seem pretty shitty and I dunno if it's even worth it. Also: Any tips? Shapes, Shadowing, that kind of thing.. How do you draw something that doesn't look like a second grader did it? I wanna be good at drawing eyes and lips but I'm pretty shit at it.. How do I get better?

Ditto on the first sentence.

Good luck with your challenge, man!

Why did you even bother posting? I can handle constructive criticism, I welcome it, but why bother going into a thread just to say 'you suck, gl', your wasting my time and yours and anyone else's who reads your post.

@Stormy - Thanks man, I love seeing other sketchbooks

Dog: I suck
Unfocused: Yeah
Dog: **** you

Edit: I just realized, Unfocused may have been saying "I am terrible at drawing, too"

But either way you need to chillax.

Dog-- is so lame. Though I am interested to see if there's any noticeable change in your drawings over the thirty day period.

Speaking of which, it's been, like, a day. Hurry up.

Oh if he was saying he sucks too then I'm sorry D:

@ Danimal - I just got home from work RELAX

I was told to practise 'cross hatching', so here it is.. Page 2. I think I'm improving D:

LOL, yeah that's what I meant, but I can see now how it could've been understood differently. I was reading the response and was like "wtf?".

And Stormy, there's some great stuff there, thx.

Let me be the first one to tell you that you won't get "good" by drawing for just 30 days. You'll improve a bit, but to get "good" you need to draw for years bro. And you better not be actually limiting yourself to just one page of random doodles. If you fill up a page and go "done!" then you're in the wrong mindset to even try and become a better artist. Also, random doodles don't exactly help, you need to draw things that will help you in your weak areas. Rendering techniques like crosshatching should be waaaay down the line in your pipeline. You're not really going to improve quickly without any structure or point to your sessions.

Learn gesture, doing random cartoons in a sketchbook everyday won't help much in progressing your skill.

Yeah, I was going to say something along the lines of what Krynn said.

I've been doodling since I was a child and I'm still not even close to good.

Improvement is a loooong slow process. You won't ever be like, 'man, I'm great at drawing now!' You will never notice that you've gotten any better unless you deliberately find some really old stuff to compare to.
