360 NOT Backwards Compatible

Following earlier indications that the Xbox 360 will only be backwards compatible with some Xbox games, Microsoft has admitted that existing software will need to be recompiled before it can be run on the new console.

The problem, it says, is down to hardware incompatibility - since the current Xbox uses an Intel processor, but the 360 will use IBM's PowerPC architecture, while NVIDIA's graphics solution is being replaced with an ATI one.

As many commentators have pointed out over the last few months, this means backwards compatibility problems. The solution Microsoft has reached is apparently to recompiled current-gen Xbox games so that they can be played on the 360. First on the list, it says, are the best-selling Halo titles.

The news has raised more questions than it answers, however, as it suggests that gamers may need to purchase titles they already own in order to play them on an Xbox 360 - and almost certainly means that only a sub-set of Xbox games will ever be playable on the new console.

Sony and Nintendo have already confirmed that their next-gen consoles - the PS3 and Revolution - will play all the games in their respective back catalogues, offering consumers a huge choice of titles at launch. Microsoft was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

So in order to play your old xbox games, you have to buy new copies, and it's up to MS which ones.

Its not definitive that you have to purchase them again. The only games I will want to go back to are the really good ones anyway. I don't see anyone wanting to play Drake of the 99 dragons on the 360.

Either way, I have an old xbox, ill plug it up in the very small chance of me wanting to play a game that isn't supported. I was never very big on the backwards compatability thing. I know a lot of people are though and this will be bad news to them.

You would expect a next generation console over 350 dollar machine would be able to play the games that you used to have. Just like you would expect a 4000 dollar computer to do almost everything related to computers. When a new type of DVD format is released and a new player to play these new types of DVD's are we going to have to unplug the new one and plug in the old one (let alone keep it instead of sell it, and waste space) so you can watch all your old DVD's? Thats bullshit...especially for the price of admission.

I must also say that you gotta work on your rhetoric man...that kind of sucked.

Not everyone here can afford all these splitters and wires so they can easily switch. Not everyone here can afford a bigger table or living room to fit two ****ing massive systems. Not everyone can afford to purchase a next gen system without selling their old one. Not everyone here can keep their system in top condition forever. Ok, let’s stop this right now. There is some serious wrong information floating around, so I need to clear this up. I grabbed my favorite PR dudes, and they are saying what I was telling a few of you in email:

“We’re not sure where this came from, and it's incorrect. At launch, Xbox 360 will be backward compatible with the top Xbox games. Our goal is to have every Xbox game work on Xbox 360. You will NOT need to purchase a new ‘version’ — your original games will work on Xbox 360.”

I wouldn't go asuming that the PS3 is more powerful than the xbox360 just yet. Yes the numbers may seem higher but if I am correct high numbers in the console industry mean **** all. Take the whole 32bit 64bit and 124bit they used to use to publises older consoles such as the medadrive and ps2, when infact they would just be as powerful if they all ran in 32bit but yet they increase the numbers to make it look more powerful. Obvisasly they did become more powerful but at one point it was a standing point for consoles to be distinguised. Anyway, as I was saying I wouldn't go thinking PS3 is more powerful just yet because after looking at high res pictures of a lot of the PS3 media I have found a lot of them to be just CG movies.

How good graphics are can technically be an opinon(how were using it here).
To a blind person, an Atari and the Ps3 are equal in graphics.

Then there are polygon rates for graphics. These can be considered facts.

There is artistic style for graphics, like World of Warcraft where the polygon rates arn't over the top yet the artistic style is....breathtaking. Artistic Style is an opinon.

Thus the Xbox 360 and the Ps3 can both be able to produce better graphics than the other, yet at the same time produce better graphics than the other and back it up with facts, and produce the same graphics as the other.

PS3 looks like it's too good to be true. Xbox too me was more realistic therefore I'm with Xbox for now. Until Sony shows actual gameplay that reflects those pre-rendered scenes, I'm sticking with Xbox.

I only expect backward's compatibility on the PC. Only backward compatible console systems I know of are Playstation and Gameboy series so far. Although Sony is continuing backward compatibility and Nintendo is doing so with the Gamecube games, I still don't expect it out of a console system.

Guess you forgot Dos to win95, win95 to win98, winME, Win2k, winXP, win2kserver. Mac Operating systems between each other, way back to the Amiga days and its newer machines not running older software correctly.
