3d surround sound problem

I bought HL2 today and the problems started..

I have sound problems, i read the stuttering topic (most of the messages) but i don't really see the problem i have there so i opened this topic..

I do have sound, but it won't play with 5.1 speaker setup.. so multichannel sound will not work here. I have the same problem with CS:S..
When I select 5.1 speaker setup, I only hear the center speaker and the subwoofer. The other 4 channels remain silent

I think this is a little bit strange cause the console says..

Heap: 500.00 Mb
DS:5.1 speaker configuration detected
3d surround sound initialization successful

Despite this, it won't work.. do you guys have any solution or are more people having this problem?
I use the onboard sound of my MSI K8T Neo motherboard. the Realtek AC97 that is.

HL2 source dosent work in 5.1 with AC97 Nforce 2 boards etc, Nvidia are working on a fix right now so expect to c it next year.

This happened when I updated AC97 drivers, today, to the latest version, released this month. I guess updating everything to the latest isn't exactly the smartest move, even though they INSIST everyone update, update, update!

As they say: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Anyway, I rolled back to 5.10.0.5350, released 10/9/2003...lol Works perfectly.

i dont have an nforce 2 board, i have a VIA ...

dudes .. it works i now have AC97 version 5.10.0.5620! works great.... better not update the sound drivers in the future

i dont have an nforce 2 board, i have a VIA ...

Same sound chip, same drivers.
