Thanks to Nicked from the Beyond3D forums.

BH: What's interesting is that the gamers out there... there weren't many of them who were thinking about watching movies on their PS2s. But since the PS3 is going to be high-definition and Blu-ray capable right out of the box, it's going to be a real wildcard for the growth of this format.

AP: You're right. The PS3 is going to represent an almost overnight population explosion of Blu-ray capable players. That's not something that's really happened before. The PlayStation 2 helped, because that came well down the road after DVD launched, but it did help to get a lot of players out there. But this is something new. The PS3 is launching right at the forefront of Blu-ray Disc. If Sony ships the kind of numbers we expect them to this year, that will provide a very rapid growth of players out there hungry for titles. We've been hearing between 4 and 7 million units could ship. And if you look at PlayStation Portable, with UMD discs, everyone is shocked at how many titles have shipped for that platform. And they're selling as well or better than the game software. So I think Sony has proven that they can drive a new video format like this with their gaming platforms.

Interesting...

I can't wait to hear about the number of people complaining about the fact that their new "blu-ray" movies don't look any different from regular DVD movies on a standard TV. I also can't wait to hear about people wondering why they should bother buying all their old movies again this time for blu-ray like they already did for regular DVD.

These new formats are really pretty useless and are only acting as a useless selling point for gamers and an expensive addition to the home theater systems of the better off.

Thats alot. But i've heard that the PS3 will cost double the Xbox 360 at its launch wont it? How do they expect to sell that many with a price like that?

I can afford a good car for less than that.

the analyst believes that despite it's estimated $700 US price tag there'll be a shortage when it launches

Analysts have been wrong before. $700 US is almost $1000 AUD. Considering i can get an Xbox 360 on release for half that, i'd go with the Xbox 360 as i haven't seen much difference between screenshots with either consoles.

Wow if the PS3 is near $1000 at any point in time (retail price) I will never buy it.

Any news on the controllers?

Sony has since shifted its concept to the following.

Playtesters and QA believed that its style felt more in line with the George Foreman Grill design.

Umm... No. I'm pretty sure:
X-Box 360 - $400
PS3 - $500

$500 < 2 * $400

Some analysts believe it will be $500 but then some others are saying it will be around $700.

Sony has not yet given the price.

ya that seems a little steep but they may be going on what the hardware is worth

Ha! Threads like this are getting so frustrating, along with articles from industry analysts paid to make inflamatory claims that will garner attention for their corporation. Nobody knows (not even Sony) what the price or launch date will be, so sit back and quit the speculation and rumor-mongering. It'll come soon enough and the gaming world will be all the better for it.

EDIT: Damn if I can't wait for DevStation 2006 though. I can only imagine the stuff that the devs are going to be showing off!

Not in Australia. Xbox 360 is about $500 AUD, my friend is a Sony rep for Kmart here in Australia and he says they estimate it'll cost past the $1000 AUD mark.

Time will tell i guess.

Whatever the cost..I'm sure it's gonna sell...the sony fan base is just as large if not larger than the X360 fan base.

really ?

i preorderd an x360 last year (i think i only paid like $400 cause that's the cash i had on me) at eb and they said it [premium package] will cost about $650au.

i wouldn't be suprised with $1000au for the ps3 considering the ps2 was like $900au when it launched here.

That's quite a bold claim...
Hahaha! That is a good one. :p

But everyone knows that they only just recently finalized the specs for Blu-Ray discs and released price points for the standalone players that will be released later this year. Given the production costs for getting enough Cell chips made and integrated with all of the other (expensive) technology, Sony has some major thinking to do before it figures out, let alone releases, any pricing info. They need to be competitive, but maybe not that competitive given that the PS3 will install a huge base for supporters of Blu-Ray technology at a cheaper cost than a standalone player and all of their supporters are banking on that. I still say around $400 USD--anything more than that is console suicide (or at least some sort of severe self-amputation).

I'm not claiming to have any idea what the PS3 will be sold for. All I know is that the initial price point for a stand alone blue ray player at the CES was around $1000 usd. Obviously this price will come down sooner rather than later, but looking at when the PS3 would go into production, I don't know that it will be low enough for the PS3 price to compete with the other console prices. So it's possible that the PS3 will either come with a really, really cheap blue ray player, or the cost of the console will be much higher than the others. Either way, I can't see it as a good thing.

Yes, I went back and forth over whether or not I should say "pun intended." In the end, I just decided italicizing the pun should be enough.

Kind of off topic but I see Blu-Ray basically taking kicking HD-DVD's ass. With Ps3 having Blu-Ray, Micosoft would have to make the laser closer to the disc(to read a smaller area, which is even closer for blu-ray) to make it Hd-DVD capable with ease(otherwise you would be buying a new drive for it).

A *Real* hitman would cost around 30-50k for a standard job.
