400GB Blu-Ray Disc

too bad bd only has like 5 more years to go before it gets replaced by quad-hd

The next format will be holographic disks wont it? 5tb on one disk i heard...

The amazing thing is that this isn't a completely new format that needs updated hardware. It plays in current blu-ray players...
It's just an advancement in layers rather than a change in format specs.

The install base is already in place and growing so their earning potential is there. They just need to cut the cost of making the disk.

streaming media and downloadable content will end up completely wiping out the need for disks..

look at steam..a prime example. sure you can still get the disk.. but i havent gotten a disk game for steam since Half life 2: ep1. ( actually my cpu came with a copy of lost planet steam copy.. but i didnt pay or choose to get that :P )

Eventually, yes. However it's just a matter of how long it will take for the format to mature and if people will want to move to it.

Disc's are still going to be around for a while. Broadband isn't at the speeds (at least in the US) where you can go to full digital distribution.

Or in estonia, where city people have 1-3 megabyte and country folk have 200 kilobyte speed.

Been like that for years. Space Odyssey 2001 had references to holographic memory. Won't happen for a while, yet. I think autostereoscopic displays will be well in by then.

However, I'm not at the forefront of holographic data storage, so I wouldn't know.

Actually it's 3.9 TB

Think about. That disc can fit about 900 000 songs on it. That's more than six years worth of music. On one disc. :O

That's fairly cool, but what I would much rather have is like an entire season of a show, in HD on one disc.

Or imagine, later on, you can get The Hobbit parts 1/2, and the three LOTR movies, all extended editions, all in HD, and with all of the special features on one disc. That would be jizz-worthy.

I hate optical discs with their redonkulous seek times.
