400MB to 4GB?!

I've had about 1GB free on my HDD for the past few days. Yesterday I downloaded a 500 MB file and today I checked, I had about 200 MB free. I deleted some files (about 200MB in total) and checked to see I had ~400MB free after this. I thought I won't bother anymore as I'm getting a new HDD today and started browsing the net. 45 minutes later I check - 3,79GB free. WTF? I know there's the paging file, temporary folders etc., but how come I got over 3GB back, considering the fact it was ~1GB during the past few days? I think I'm scared. :rolling:
