I have a 400W PSU, and I am in the process of purchasing a 7800GT with a new SLI motherboard. Is 400 sufficient? Or should I purchase a new one just to be safe?

If so, could you link me to your recommendations? Try to keep the price under $50. If it is possible also, could you recommend me a case with a nice PSU?

EDIT: Hmm.. I just checked the PSU and noticed it is only 400W.. It runs the 12v at 17A...

I heard the 7800GT uses less Watts than a 6800GT. And a 6800GT uses 10 more Watts than my 9800PRO. So that means the 7800GT is between the 6800GT running at about 65W and the 9800PRO running at about 55W. Are you sure it won't hold up?

Curious as to where you got one.

Still, I wouldn't get one without at MINIMUM a 480w PSU. Asus can probably comment more on this, but it would probably run, just allot of crashes during high energy use times.

I was going to wait till Asus did comment to purchase anything. Though I have heard that some people with PSUs rated at 250W can run 6800GTs, 1 GB of RAM, the works, and can handle it with ease.

SLI rigs are looking at 500Watt recommended FYI.
A 7800 card uses a little less than the 6800 cards but the 6800 cards use about 20watts more than the 9800XT in 3D load.

Some people can get away with running on lower watts but there is a lot of risk since you don't know how close you are to that limit or if your PSU will die on you down the road because of that stress. It's safer to get something you know will work.

Also you probably have a 20pin power supply now and it would be best to get one with the 24pins and 2 12V+ rails which supply power to the PCI-Express slots.

But I won't be running in SLI.. It just so happens that I am going to be recieving a free SLI motherboard.

Also, if you recommend me getting a new PSU, which do you prefer? I really don't want to spend a lot of money. Around $50 I would think..

You should be fine then. SLI is what would put it over the top.

Thanks Asus. If I get random crashes or anything, I will be sure to blame you. ;)

If it dosn't you be sure to give him, and me of course, money!

Would this one be sufficient?

Not the colour of course.

It'd be ok, but brands like Enermax, Tagan, Hiper, Antec and ThermalTake are more recommended.

It just so happens that I get the motherboard free. I don't ever plan on running SLI.. I feel as though its a waste since I know 1 card will be good for quite some time.

I don't know if that will help.. Since I am only going to run the 1 card.

I will not be overclocking.

i think both are pretty good, but probablyl go with thermaltake

I think I might try out that Thermaltake..

I need Asus to back me up though.

Seasonic S12.. rock solid

haven't heard much of aspire

EDIT: seasonic has a 3yr warranty

Bump this bia.
I narrowed it down to these:

The Thermaltake and Aspire have a 5 star rating with a minimum of 340 voters. While the Coolermaster has a 5 Star rating with 75 voters. The one other Aspire has a 5 star rating with 12 voters. And so on..

The thermaltake has a 2 good fans, not too much bad stuff; i think it's a UPS too.
The coolermaster is more efficient than the aspire 520w. by about 5-8 percent. Coolermaster is probablly cooler.
Fortron is good but i can't find any more info about that particular one.

(i'm not making this up, i researched them)
