5.1 sound just isnt workin :( any suggestions?

well this isnt a BIG issue but annoying just the same since i just got 5.1 speakers pretty much for this game!

when i turn 5.1 on (which works fine in other games) i only get sound out of the middle speaker and thats it, which makes sounds that arent right in front of you almost completley mute. i have had to resort to 2 speaker sound

i have a realtek ac97 integrated 5.1 soundcard (very standard!!!) with latest drivers, anyone else had this problem or found a way to fix it. thanks alot guys!!

For the Realtek ALC650 chipset, 3.63 is the latest one that works properly for CS:S and HL2 (not 3.64/3.65current). Just rename the link on Realtek's site to get the older version, ie location 2:

ftp://152.104.125.40/pc/ac97/alc650/wdm_a363.exe

That's for Windows 98/98se/ME/2000/XP.

I have a similar problem. I was using 4 speaker surround sound on my realtek ac97 onboard soundchip. But the source games only work on 2 speaker setting.

I just tried this and... it works! Thanks for it urinal_cake! Unbelievable, that the most up-to-date driver isn't working correctly.

it works!! thanks so much urinal_cake!!, its a totally different game and im very pleased! i had tried the driver switcharoo but i think i used 3.60 instead of 3.63 and figured it was hopeless, thanks again!
