I finally finished putting my new computer together, and got all the drivers installed, and all the fun stuff is out of the way, heres a quick rundown of the specs

AMD3200+
X800XL
1024MB RAM corsair

I also bought a set of logitech 5.1 speakers. They all seem to work fine, when I test the sound on them through the "Sound Effect" program, surround works perfectly. But in Half Life 2 it's a different story

I have the audio in the game set to 5.1, and I only get sound from my center speaker and subwoofer. Here's the big problem, it makes the game pretty much unplayable for me, since I don't know what the hell is going on half the time due to not being able to hear anything. When someone talks to me in the game, I have to be looking right at them for it to come out of my center speaker, if I turn to the side the voice will go away, and I can't hear anything. So obviously the surround sound is THERE, but it's not coming out of the speakers. I could care less about the rears, but the side speakers are pretty important because half the time somebody will be telling me important stuff offscreen, and I wont hear any of it.

Cliff notes: The surround sound works fine, just not in the game. Any ideas?

Have you activated the 5.1 in the sound options? You'll need to do that- it'll be set to 2 by default.

update drivers, fiddle with the settings. I would have a similar problem and in the end updating the driver and cpl seemed to fix things, now it plays back properly for me. Maybe take a look at the commands you can use too, might have to tinker with some of those to get it playing right.

Get a new sound card. With integrated, every time i move my mouse, or type i get little noises.

sounds like interference.. I get that but its not loud enough to bug me unless im listening really hard, but the fans everywhere usually drown out anything below 100dB :p

I already activated the 5.1 sound in options, and last night I updated my Realtek drivers, I have 8channel onboard audio on my mobo, A8VN-E Delux. I'm going to go and try it again now that I have updated drivers, hopefully it will work.

Yeah everything is set up right, I did the updated driver install and reboot. And now the front side speakers and sub work fine, but the center speaker never comes on, nor do the rears. And 5.1 is set up in HL, as well as windows. I guess its no big deal if it can't be fixed, I can hear dialog when I turn to the side now, all the sound comes through the 2 fronts, but it'd be nice to have full surround.

I don't think you should give up that easily, you have paid for it, so we will try and help you to get it working! So you are saying that the front, and sub only come on in windows now, or is that in HL2?

Surround sound works fine? Hearing the ppl speak any better?

I'd double check where you have them plugged into the back of the board.

My surround is really odd, i've always had trouble getting it to work. At the moment it isn't working, the back speakers and centre arent working anyway. I've had it working before, i just rebooted and its not working.... i think its rediculous because i havent changed any settings since it was working :( and i dont have a clue whats switching it off... or on or whatever.
