A Grand Theft Auto IV public demonstration (video) was shown today at the Take-Two Interactive Software press event at E3.

The demo was about five minutes long. It showed Niko walking through the replica of Times Square. Planes were in the sky. Big band music from the 1940s was playing on the radio in the car that Niko was driving.

Just a heads up. hopefully we'll see some ingame footage if someone uploads it.

Also, a new details from Play (UK) magazine:

* McReary is a corrupt cop, like Officer Tenpenny in San Andreas
* The arms dealer called Little Jacob is a good friend of Niko's cousin, Roman
* Rotterdam Hill is in Alderney
* The first mission in the demo was called "Call and Collect"
* There are no arrowheads to guide you in the game
* The HUD has been streamlined to only a few displays.
* The map remains, sensibly, as does the wanted level and the money
* But visuals on the map in the demo are reduced to mere blips in the top corner of the impressive display
* The new wanted level system system starts with the map flashing wit hcircles of blue and red.
* The wanted level system has been completely revamped from the previous games, It's now based on vision, with each circle representing the line of sight of the police chase.
* The wanted level system has six levels as in previous games.
* Pedestrians drink while out on streets.
* The increased difficulty of the game could alienate some of the fans.
* When you kill Goldberg, there are at least two possible cutscenes, the first saw Goldberg crumpled down onto the floor and the second saw Goldberg fall out of the window.
* You exit Goldberg's Office and there are three security guards blocking your way.
* You can hug the wall like in Metal Gear Solid to cover yourself from fire.
* You can also strafe, which is helpful when you take on the police.
* If you escape the building, it's mission complete.
* Rockstar has added bodily damage to the proceedings, with certain actions triggerings different reactionary deaths.
o Game Example 1: Shoot a security guard in the foot at the top of the stairs and he will come tumblings down the stairs.
o Game Example 2: Shoot Goldberg, the lawyer, with a shotgun in front of a window and he'll meet his end on the streets below as he tumbles out.

Demo details:

Demo Starts...

- Niko Bellic is in a replica of Times Square., that is Star Junction.
- Trademark map icon in the corner.
- There's some strange clipping with NPCs, and a notable lack of pedestrians.
- He struts around for a bit, then steals a car.
- Niko tolls around in a luxury sedan to some big band music from the 1940s.
- Lighting looks fantastic, textures looking solid and rugged.
- Frame rate is a bit jumpy, but level of detail in landscape is greater than Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
- Niko pulls up to the docks under the "Broker Bridge" as the sun rises. The light plays on the water, and then starts illuminating the city behind him.
- Clouds above Liberty City light up, with planes flying through them.
- Clouds keep lighting up as Niko calls up his buddy to "get some firepower.

Demo ends

any news on Multi player side ?

Apparently we won't see any gameplay footage/images since Take Two wouldn't let anyone take photos or record; they had someone with night-vision goggles to stop anyone.

Booooo.

Hrm, I suspect THQ will want to release something much better for the general public.

That's pretty ghey if its true.

Whats the point of going to E3 if you aren't going to show ingame demos of your game this far along in your development. Don't get our hopes up, just skip the entire event you pricks.

Anyone read the article in electronics gaming magazine? They had some cool stuff in there. Hehe, we can climb telephone poles! :D

This is troubling.

I read somewhere that the multiplayer is accessed through the mobile.

They've still got a good two months left to work on it yet. I bet there is a lack of pedestrians because the game hasn't been optimised fully yet. Plus I bet the build shown at E3 was an older build. It will be fine come release.

Again, all this stuff sounds awesome. Looking forward to it! :)

Yeah you're right. It seems that traffic and most AI characters were actually turned off during the demo. It was reported in this IGN article.. But the worrying factor is the low framerate, even with traffic and AI tuned off.

Not really. Like Ren.182 said, they still got time to work on it and doing stuff like this takes usually place last in development.
