Up to 500 people have been killed after a crowd of Iraqi Shiites stampeded off a bridge over the River Tigris in Baghdad, Iraq's deputy Health Minister Jalil Al-Shumari says.

The crowd was on its way to the Kadhimiya mosque for an important religious ceremony.

People reportedly panicked as rumours spread that a suicide bomber was preparing to blow himself up, and many worshippers were crushed.

The iron railings of the bridge gave way, throwing hundreds into the River Tigris

Crazy stuff. I always think about these sort of situations when i'm at sports games with tens of thousands of people. Stampedes are shocking.

Mass hysteria/panic is a very dangerous thing.

Where is that god of ours again? 500 people! Seriously i dont know how any terrorist could live with themselves with that kinda shit. This is akin to 9/11, terrorism ...

This is just soo fricken outta hand. And who bets it aint gonna get worse before it gets better? Civil war looking more ominous by the day?

I don't think there was actually a suicide bomber there, a rumour started and mass panic took over.

mostly women & children it seems, over 600 dead, terrible:( ...

I have been in large tight crowds with no easy escape route before and was pretty worried about what would happen if general panic started. It really is a waste and what really sucks is that there is probably no one to blame. Even the person who said there was a suicide bomber may have actually thought there was one.

I can only imagine the sheer terror and panic that run through this crowd. Two simple words "Suicide Bomber", a threat these people live with on a daily basis, circulated round a crowd full of women and children, possibly 600 dead. Everyday the news out of Iraq gets worse, Dear God, let it end....

absolutely horrible ...as if these people havent suffered enough

btw the death toll is up to 648 dead and 322 injured

Wow, that's terrible.

The worst part is that if actually were just a bomb, the deaths would likely have been far fewer.

Ya man...when something big happens in a very crowded spot people wont think twice to run right over u to get out of there...just the way humans work I guess.

why can;t all the muslims get along with each other?
as much as this is a tragedy in the loss of human life it is also a tragedy in the fact that people even have to worry about such things as suicide bombers

Islam is just having a hard time these days. Every religion at some point or another does. The 30 Years War in Germany devastated the economy and country, mostly, if not the entire reason was due to differences in the Catholic and Protestant churches.

At times like these, I wish the entire middle east was like Turkey. :|

The "funny" thing is if there was a suicide bomber, probably wouldn't have gotten more than a few hundred. :|

Mortar fire had hit worshipers earlier in the day killing 16 i think. So they were pretty nervous i'd say.

Wow, that's some funny shit. You'd think one person would be like, "hey, maybe we shouldn't step on these people you know?"

ignoring the obvious idiot ....

"...an Interior Ministry official told Reuters most victims were women and children who "died by drowning or being trampled" after panic swept a throng of thousands as they headed to a religious ceremony"

here's a pic to give you an idea of the chaos

Thats a horrible thing to happen, but I level some blame at the organisations that began this parade. Gathering a million very scared people into one place where the threat of terrorist activity is huge? Not smart.

I have no problem with them displaying their religous beliefs, but this was just not a good time to do it.

EDIT: Oh, and the government in Iraq is firmly blaming Saddamists for this, even with no evidence of explosives or anything else.
The terrorist pointed a finger at another person saying that he was carrying explosives and that led to the panic,
Nice to see how they have no problems with decieving their people and spreading obvious propaganda rubbish to try and draw attention away from their mistakes. Remind you of anyone?

you know, i think less would have been killed from a bomb, compared to the 600 that died from trampling...
