"Today, the Alabama Supreme Court rejected an appeal to throw out a $600 million lawsuit blaming Grand Theft Auto for the murders of two police officers and a dispatcher. The trial judge's decision to not dismiss the suit was upheld, but the Alabama Supreme Court also agreed to hear claims challenging whether or not Alabama courts have the power to hear the case. The court made its ruling without comment.

In June 2003, Devin Moore killed three people at a Fayette Police Department. The judge of the case forbade the defense to link the murders to violent video games and later sentenced Moore to death. The families of the people who were killed in the shootings filed suit against Take-Two (makers of Grand Theft Auto), Sony (makers of the system that Moore played Grand Theft Auto on), along with Wal-Mart and Gamestop (who allegedly sold Grand Theft Auto to Moore, who was then a minor)"

funny how they dont go after the gun he used, the music he listened to and which tv programs he watched

I remember back in the early 80's when crazy people did crazy things, back then they were simply called crazy. The good old days when music was the root of all evil and violent television and 8 bit video games were considered wholesome enterprises.

Back then the geezers in power didn't understand the music. Now the geezers in power don't understand the video games. The wheel of life keeps right on spinning.

holy shit, 600 MILLION?

Thats a lot of cash

it's a civil lawsuit ..the judge could rule for more

If he's that stupid...but I really hope not.

i dont get it, if a judge already ruled games couldnt be blamed, how can this go about?

This is a civil suit, probably for wrongful death, rather than the already conducted criminal trial. Similar to how OJ was found innocent in the criminal trial but guilty in the civil one (so he had to pony up a lot of cash).

What I'm wondering is how the hell they're suing both Gamestop and Walmart? Which one sold it to him? It just reeks of them suing anyone they can in the hopes that one will cave and give them money.

because it's a civil suit ..the family is suing take two and retailers for selling the game to Devin because he was a minor at the time ..in a criminal trial they didnt have a hope in hell proving GTA caused Devin to commit the crime ..in a civil lawsuit they dont have to prove he intended to kill the police officer ..they're not trying to prove he committed the crime ..there's a world of difference ...take two could very well lose this case

edit: heh Direwolf beat me to it

The funny thing is that he apparntly bought GTA from 2 shops.

but no, I blame guns for today's problems ..everything from people falling and impaling themselves on guns to pistol whipping baby seals for their fur ..guns are to blame

Actually, Celine Dion makes me see angry smells, this is true. But only enraged against her.
*Shudders* The horror...

Were you actually blaming the music and TV, or were you just saying that if they are gonna blame games, you might as well blame those things too?

I'm an equal opportunity hater ..I blame everyone

el chi: celine makes me see angry smells too

I knew I wouldn't get a straight answer!

I knew it.

what's a straight answer? I may not know but I'm starting to think you're to blame for me not knowing

Yes or No?

Yes, that's what I was saying.

No, I think that TV and Music is more to blame than games.

Also, make your response less gay, jeez.

alright alright I'll give you a straight answer ......what was the question again?

kidding :E

no I blame the individual

This reminds my of an excerpt from one of my favorite stand up comedy routines of all time. "Bigger and Blacker" by the one, the only Mr. Chris Rock.

"Whatever happened to crazy?
What, you can't be crazy no more?
Did we eliminate ''crazy'' from the dictionary?
**** the records. **** the movies. Crazy!
When l was a kid, they used to separate
the crazy kids from everybody.
When l was a kid, the crazy kids
went to school in a little-ass bus.
They had a class at the end of the school...
and they used to get out of school at 1:00.
Just in case they went crazy...
that way they would only hurt other crazy kids.
And we was all safe.
Damn, the world's coming to an end.
You'll have little white kids saying:
''l want to go to a black school
where it's safe.''

OMG, sue Sony because of the console and Walmart because of the seller?!

They should sue America for allowing it and the Judge for stopping them, oh oh and sue the creator of circuit boards too. :|

One day I shall sue society.

Oh yeah? Well watch your back.

I could be anywhere anytime, in any situation.

When you least suspect it... BAM! I scald my mouth on boiling hot coffee you serve me. Or any number of identically criminal situations.

Your days are numbered, Sulkdodds! D:

Wow. Just, wow. Clearly I can see why they would go after the shop for selling the violent game to a minor, and possibly a link to take-two for making the violent game... but suing sony for making the console? I don't think they've got a case there. The games were made by a third party for Sony's system, Sony didn't have much of a part in it.

Let's sue Bill Gates for founding Microsoft, who created paint which alows one to create images of SEXUAL ORENTATION and is available to MINORS!

No no no, sue Bill Gates for founding Microsoft, which made Windows, which allows people to store pornography! That's the kind of message I get from them suing sony... it's something they didn't really control.

Let's sue John Carpenter and the Lumiere Brothers (for inventing cinema), because a murderer claimed Mike Myers did it.

UPDATE:

reason 1,456,987 why Jack Thompson needs to be tarred and feathered:

Thompson vows to 'destroy Rockstar'

"Outspoken game 'hater' attorney Jack Thompson, alongside attorneys Patrick Gray and Raymond Reiser, told GameSpot.com that they will "change the face of the entertainment industry" and "destroy Rockstar", after a civil lawsuit surrounding the murder of two policeman survived an attempt to dismiss the case in the Supreme court. The 600 million USD lawsuit alleges that the videogame Grand Theft Auto Vice City is responsible for the murder of Arnold Strickland and Leslie "Ace" Mealer in Alabama. The two policeman were killed when carjacker Devin Moore grabbed a policeman's gun and shot the two officers while in custody.

The Alabama lawsuit alleges that the game was instrumental in the murder, and is Thompson's latest attempt to break a company he has engaged in court innumerable times, surrounding allegations that GTA is a menace to society owing to its controversial content. There remains ambiguity about the Alabama court's authority, and the ability for the case to survive other ongoing challenges.

"I am counsel for all of the plaintiffs, they are still my clients, I was the one who won the First Amendment argument in the hearing on November 3, 2005, which trial record was what was appealed to the Alabama Supreme Court, and I fully expect to be in the courtroom trying the case when it is tried," commented Thompson."

They could nuke Alabama and hit several birds with one stone. I thought republicans were against frivolous lawsuits?

He's insane. How has nobody important noticed what a class-A **** he is yet?

I'm gonna go blow up the white house with a subway train full or fertilizer and fireworks!

Jack Thompson is going crazier by the second.
