i hope to god i have posted this in the right forum!

with my new comp i got a AMD 64 chip. I heard that there might be a 64bit version of half-life 2 coming out, is this rumor true? If it is do you think tha having 64bit colour would mean it takes up more CPU, as I only have 2.0 Ghz.

I honestly dont know, I dont think theyd go out of their way this close to make a 64 bit hl2, but they may include it in a patch you could download.

Back in 2003 there were a few e-mails from Gabe and maybe Rick Ellis wherein they said they would continue to upgrade the Source engine continually, part of these upgrades would eventually be an update that 64-bit processor owners can download to be able to get the most out of their next-gen processors.

Yeah, they will take advantage of 64Bits with a version of HL2.

It isn't 64Bit Color. 64Bit just means the CPU can take 64Bits of data at once rather than 32Bit, not a Video Card issue.

We all like how Athlon 64's perform in Doom 3 with only 32Bits. Link
I'm sure we will in HL2 as well. ;)
haha, even look at the Sempron 3100+ value chip (Celeron of the AMD64's).

Guys, if you have anything higher than a 2.4 don't even upgrade until PCI express comes out fully.
Plain and simple.
It isn't a big upgrade to go from a AGP slot to another AGP slot. Just wait so we can get better slots that will support better games.
We do plan on having two 16x PCI-Express slots for two video cards going to one monitor. It will be two times faster. well, not really.
it would really be around 1.7 times faster if I do my math right.

Yes you are right Asus

I don't know how long you've been around the forums, but this generally goes without saying.

I might just go with a 3000+, cheaper but still awesome. Also I was wondering would it be ebtter right now to get a s754 mobo or s939? for future cpu upgrades.

go with the 3400+

I haven't looked at the prices lately, but if the price cuts that were released a few weeks ago have taken effect the 3400+ is a steal.

Oh right, so what diffrence does 64bit make then processor wise?

same speed processor processes twice the ammount of data at once.

For AMD 2.0 ghz is fast.

And I might break all your hearts by revealing this but....The fate of your 64 bit cpu is controlled by Microsoft. Why? A 64 bit version of windows must come out before it starts making any difference. So if you buy the 64 bit version of hl2, you must be running windows 64 bit version. And having a faster CPU in hl2, will give you better faster physics performance, as all physics calculations are controlled by your cpu.

they are not selling a 64 bit version of HL2

they said they would release a 64-bit client update down the road

whatever. That's beside the point.

how is it beside the point? the way you posted, you make it sound like it's bad to own a 64-bit processor at the moment because windows-64 bit isn't out yet, and also that you'd have to buy a 64-bit version of HL2 to take advantage of it when it does.

HL2 WILL take full advantage of 64 bit processor once teh update comes. Valave said they would be doing it.

does that mean that it is like having 4.0Ghz? Will I actually be able to see the difference on screen or will things just run faster?

64Bit will speed up some tasks more than others.

With 64bit, it will be able to handle more at once better and quicker than a 32bit CPU. Whether that is more players on the screen, detailed environments or allow for the physics and other calculations to be done faster.

In specific areas it will be slightly better and as a whole it expands the possiblities.

The actual Frame Rate for your graphics card will not be that much different except for the fact that the CPU load will be reduced, I would think especially for the physics part of it.

I hope it actually comes out quite soon after the release of HL2 because now I can justify all the money I spent on my brand spanking new AMD 64 FX-53

Windows XP 64bit edition isn't out yet. It will only become a reality after that is officially released.
