This has been getting me frustrated all day. I got my 6600 gt today and I installed it just like any other card. However, anytime the card has to do ANYTHING that is 3D, it lags and lags, then it crashes my computer. I have been seeing the temperature in the control panel and its only about 41C. Heck, it kills my computer even when I do the dxdiag direct x test. You know, the lil spinning cube? Anyway, I get like 4 fps on that before my computer freezes.

Yes, I plugged in the power connector, I even put it on a seperate power cable, all on its own! Still nothing. I also already set the AGP Aperture size in the BIOS to 128mb. I am very stumped at this point and I'm considering sending it back. Is there anything else in the BIOS that I can possibly change to get it to work right? Is it defective? I have also tried re-installing drivers, and using driver cleaner like a good 20 times already. And not only the display drivers, I've also been doing the same with the motherboard drivers (nForce2). They are all the latest drivers and what-not.

And if you must know my specs are:

AMD Athlon 2400+
512mb RAM
Motherboard: Shuttle AN35n Ultra
And I use the onboard sound.

Another thing, I read the troubleshooting in the manual and it says somthing about an AGP mini-port dirver. Is that the same as the nForce 2 GART driver, or somthing else?

How's the wattage on your psu? Perhaps when it has to do 3d work, it's lack of provided power kills it.

Are you installing drivers straight from nVidias web site, or that came with your installation cd (not sure if that card even COMES with a cd) the ones from the provided cd may be out of date.

What DX9 version do you have installed? I'd just try reinstalling it all. Basicy display driver, DX9, Nvidia gfx drivers.
Not really sure.

How many Watts is your Power Supply anyway?

I had direct x version 9.0b, but I have already installed 9.0c. My power supply is 350W, and I didn't bother installing the drivers from the CD, I just got the newest ones from the nvidia website. Also right before XP shows the welcome screen, it sort of has like two filckering lines, then it go to the welcome screen. And since installing the card, I have gotten sluggish performance all around even in Windows itself.

Try a fresh reformat. That usually helps a lot of problems.

I want to avoid a format. I'm sure I can get it solved without having to.

A format is good for a PC but, to protect your important files and porn...try reading support info on Nvidia's website. Also, did you uninstall any drivers you had for a previous card or is the card put into a new system? Try basic troubleshooting, newest DX downloaded, newest drivers, newest mobo BIOS update, etc.

Another note, jk about the p0rn

I already did all that. But thanks anyway.

Sorry for posting again but the edit button expired. Anyways, I downloaded the nVidia system utility and I have not changed anything yet, but is it normal that the AGP is set to the minimum? Here's a picture. And again, this is how it looked as soon as I opened the program. I have not touched it at all.

On a side note, my computer no longer crashes, I just get like 3 frames in 3D games and I even get lag in the Counter Strike Source menu. The menu for crying out loud!

yeha i have this problem in my smartgart on my 9600xt it has set by agp bus speed to off and i dont know why i get pretty horrific performance in most source games, but in my bios it says it is set to agp 8X any help ?

I don't know about it being set to off, but I've searched and apparently 66mhz is what the AGP bus should be at. So I guess that makes my other post useless. Thanks for all the help guys.

Ok. So I was on the phone with a BFG technician and after a while he said that it might be the IRQ of the video card. Because it is currently assigned to IRQ 19, he said that 19 is too low on the priority and the only way to fix that would be to re-install windows. I guess it could'nt be avoided, but oh well, I did'nt spend $250 for nothing. Any other thoughts would still be appreciated.

Well, I re-installed Windows XP Pro, and I guess for the most part the problem is'nt as serious as before. But my card is still being lame. I ran Max Payne 2 just now and everything at low with a low resolution resulted in good, ok gameplay. I quit the game, changed it to high settings, then put the resolution at 1024 x 768, the game was unplayable.

I know my specs aren't the greatest, but shouldn't a 6600 GT be able to pull off Max Payne 2 with out a problem?? Also, the DXDIAG test with the spinning cube still lags.

1) chill dude, it's only been 6 hours. If you want a faster response, try a hardware forum, not an hl2 forum.

2) is the card fully seated in the slot?
3) Boot into safe mode, use driver cleaner to remove the drivers, then install the latest ones.
4)Turn AGP fastwrites off in the BIOS

Have you tried with older NVIDIA chipset drivers, or the ones that came on the CD?

While no companies drivers are perfect, NVIDIA has been having problems recently (ie. Copy protection problems, etc.).

i was seriously considering getting a 6600 gt but i am fast being converted back into the 9800 ro school of thinking after reading this

Well, its not like yours won't work. Some people have problems with their computers making their 6600 not useable or causes problems, while others are easily able to install and use them.

yeah its just that i keep getting told ati gives superior image quality, even though ive seen screenies which easily show that the 6600gt has much nicer AA etc, doesnt have a washed out effect that something like a 9800 pro does while being faster than it. ive just read to many articles on how nvidia have been getting "creative" with their drivers to fix benchmarks. ive waited so long to upgrade my card that im starting to think i should wait and see if ATi do a AGP version of the x700

Oh yeah I tried driver cleaner and all these different BIOS settings but nothing. Even a fresh install of Windows didn't help. But I was able to test it out in my freind's computer and I got the same problem so I think the card is defective and I already set up an RMA. And I know its defective because my freind's computer has a 500w power supply, AMD 64 3400+ and a gig of RAM and it still lagged in the DXDIAG test. So I'm positve its the card now.

Well, here is what I get on the stress test. I felt like putting this up for laughs. Again, I got this same performance on my freind's computer so I know its the card that is defective.
