I got my 6800 GT today and put it in my machine (3400+ 64-bit AMD.) I start the computer and smoke rises up from the vid card. I turn off the computer and take it out. A lovely smell slowly close in around me, and then I realise that the card just fried on me. What seems to be the source of this? Defective card from the factory or what?
PSU is Aopen 400W.

I'm getting a new card tommorow (My dad works with computers. They just recived a crapload of GTs.) And I want to make sure it's not my rig, but the card that was defective...

Anyone?

Use a molex from your CD/DVD drive. You know that works. Then you can test another molex in your much cheaper CD/DVD drive.

Oh, compare the AGP voltage for the slot to the AGP voltage recommended for the card. You can find slot voltage info in your motherboard manual and for the card it should be in the card manual. Simple(!)

something simple like making sure its all the way in solves that problem half the time..

I cooked a stick of ram like that once.

Here's what I did: Opened the case, took out my crappy GF4 MX420 and put in the 6800 GT. I made sure it was all the way in, and I screwed the card into place in the case. First i didn't connect the power cable to the card. When I turned on the computer, it just started screaming. Nothing happened with the card. It was when I stuck in the cable from the PSU into the card and then turned on the machine it fried.

I'm really not that good with this stuff but.....could it be a cheap power supply? I've never really heard of Aopen before. Asus?

damn that sucks. but at least you can get a replacement free. I'm glad that didn't happen to me. I just got my 6800 ultra.

AOpen are a pretty good brand, they make good graphics cards and cases so doubt they would make crappy psus.

Alright, from the replies gathered the conclusion has to be: The card was a defect from the factory.

Thanks for the replies here. Still open to other theories!

Yeah the card was probably a defect, AOpen is a good brand, they make good mobo's and their power supplies aren't bad enough to do that to your card. Very few are. Powmax psu's could probably fry your card though. They suck.

Just a little update.
I got my money back for the Aoelus GT and bought a Point of View GT. for a puny $10 I'll get Doom3 as a bundle. It's due for tommorow.
That's a lesson to be learned Aoelus, NEVER hire thai slaves to create your VGA cards!

I got an leadtek 6800GT the cooler has it's own inbuilt beatbox.
