So, alienware (horrible service (for me at least)) has been building a computer for me for a month and a half now. Originally it was setup to have a 6800 ultra installed, but after it was stalled on phase 8 for 3 weeks i called and asked what the %*$& was going on. Apparently the 6800 ultra wont be shipped to them until the second week of October, so i had them put in an x800 xt instead so it could be shipped off next week. Ok, obviously it's a top end card also so i won't be havning any problems , but what differences should i really see from a 6800 ultra? should i wait until october or stick with my decision? any advice would really help. thanks :E

You will see lower performance in Doom 3 but still 60FPS constant. You will get overall better performance in many DirectX, especially in DX9 games like HL2.

Turning on the AF setting will hardly drop your performance. Normally the amount of detail and sharpness goes down a lot as you look in the distance more and more, AF makes textures look sharper and more detailed. Use it and enjoy it. :)

Hahaha, Asus, you got modded. w00t

Anyway, if anything, you're getting a better deal. The XT is better than the Ultra.

im having the same problem..i dont know weather to go with 6800 Ultra or the x800xt. I have had better luck with Nvidia it seems like (games running better, better support and drivers) so I am stuck in a bind..

x800 XT > 6800 Ultra

6800 GT > x800 Pro

That's how it stands right now. ATI cards are better for DX9 games (HL2 is one of them) and Nvidia cards are better for Open GL games (Doom 3), but in overall performance, the x800 XT PE is better.

I guess I am just discouraged.. my Gforce4 mx 440 got better frames per second in most of my games then my 9600 AIW did and I just seem to have lots of trouble with ATI cards. I dont want to get the card and have a bunch of problems with it.

ATI has really stepped up their support since their 9700 card. They release driver updates for offical drivers once a month now.
Nvidia has actually toned down how often they release drivers this past year. Since one of their last official updates this summer, their update before that was back in April.

ATI's goal is to have widerange compatibilty and updates for over all games, not just focusing on the popular ones.

The the main issue that you may run into is previously having a Nvidia card installed.
Just run a driver cleaner in that case. By the way, I have seen cases where switching from ATI to Nvidia does the same thing but with everyone switching from Nvidia to ATI since the 9700 it hasn't been noticed as much as the reverse. ;)

Well, you could have just had bad luck with your ATI card, but right now in pretty much all games at high resolutions with quite a bit of AA/AF enabled, the x800 XT takes the lead. But if you're looking between the GT and Pro, the GT is the winner.

Im definetly going to go with either the XT or Ultra. I think I am going to go with the XT..since DX is the future not OpenGl.

EDIT: Also it wasnt the old nvidia drivers causing trouble with my 9600. Since i just reformatted. Maybe my card is just bad or old or something.

Becuse I KNOW I should be geting better FPS in BF1942 with my 9600 then i was with my MX.

There isn't really a noticable difference between the two in game. I mean really, a few numbers in a test may be one thing, but are you really going to notice that miniscule edge?

ehh those cards wont be much different i mean i got good fps with my old 9100 running doom 3, and now with my 9800 pro its as good as i want it, id say go for the xt but im sure other ppl on this forum will tell you go for the 6800, jsut go for w/e card you want more
