Ive been in the market for new speakers and i'm on the verge of buying speakers, but after hearing forum arguements and peoples suggestions, a few questions remain

7.1 - apparently it is really damn nice with games, but the systems have a big price difference. the lowest one is around $125 and it's creative, the other 7.1 systems are all around $400 and supposed to be really good. the problem is that i don't want to spend $$ for the expensive thugged out top 7.1 speakers and i don't want to settle for crappy 7.1 speakers. On the other hand, i have heard that for games and stuff it's not exactly as worth it as people make it seem because 7.1 is still new and only the top new stuff supports it.... does HL2 even support it? I think I remember hearing that valve said they will support new sound technology as it comes out.

^^ the $415 ones (the damn best pc speakers out)

^^ the $115 ones (not too great speakers, but they are 7.1)

here are quotes from newegg about the CREATIVE GigaWorks S750 7.1 Speaker System ($415)

"If you blast these things while playing, say, Max Payne, you will get some kind of response from your neighbors or local law enforcement. Especially effective in basements of connected housing units, just point the sub at the concrete, and YIPEEE!"

"Got lucky and found a great deal on the 7.1 set up, dont waste your time with the 5.1s just shell out the bucks and go for the gusto! I have been trying all my games to check out the sounds and when I play Call of Duty I am literaly ducking in my chair!!! Bullets and shells come from all directions (sorry neighbors) INCREDIBLE!"

"THESE ROCK! if you got the money, you can't go wrong with these along with the audigy 2 zs platinum pro. only had it hooked up for a couple hours and the neighbors are already complaining! lots of bass and the highs sound clear as a bell when cranked up. "

6.1 - i don't know anything about these - are they just 5.1 except alittle snazzier? these logitech 6.1 speakers are on newegg http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=36-121-115&depa=0
no customer reviews :(

5.1 apparently if you have a good system + new audigy, 5.1 speakers are the bomb. but they are merely ok if you buy econo-speakers ( $100 price range ) buy logitech people say if you are going to buy around the $100 price range, above 200 or so buy creative or top logitech

if you want $200 price range speakers creative megaworks are supposed to be the best

speaker stands
hard to get as far as my searching can tell, creative has $30 speaker tripods (pair) but they only work with crappy creative speakers\
then they have nice speaker stands for $60 for One

questions
what do you guys do for speaker stands- (should i make my own?)

what is the best 5.1 card for an around $200 price range

what is the best new video card to buy if you want the best but not too pricey

:sniper:

7.1 and 6.1 are not out yet the are "Simulated" which means there is no hardware that supports that technology. However...the 7.1 technology should come out soon.

hrmm, then why do the new audigy cards support 7.1 channels?

Perhaps they are..."Simulated" by the card. Or should I say, taking sounds from the other channels to create for the other 2.

Audigy2 of some kind. It won't matter that much unless you like front ports in the bays by your Optical drives. ;)
I'd probably recommend the Audigy2 Gamer though.

See if you can make your own stands. Or email creative or logitech to see if they actually make stands that would work with those speakers.

A 9800Pro 128MB (256Bit) would be an awesome video card for ~200$ USD.
Otherwise a X800pro or 6800GT would be good for ~400$.
There is nothing worth buying inbetween that range. IMO

My personal opinion is to get quality speakers first. Then worry about adding more speakers. For example if my choice was a real quality and powerful set of 2.1 speakers or an average 5.1 system, I would go for the 2.1 system in a heart beat. Same with 5.1 vs 7.1.

what would you recommend for a quality sound card around $100

Audigy 2 ZS Gamer is $129.99 USD on the retail shelves.
And Retails for $110 USD at Newegg.

The Audigy 2 ZS RETAIL version is $88 at newegg. That would work great.

I don't even have a use for that Audigy 2 ZS Gamer, but I want it so bad :P Must...resist....buying...new...comp...GAHH!

What about buying a really nice pair of USB headphones, maybe sennheiser or are you a home theatre type?

what's the difference between the ZS gamer and ZS? like realistically if anyone knows

i don't want those crappy games that come with the sound card if it does (tomb raider 15?)

i have a pair of DSP-500's i got for free a while back, they break every few months though, bad headphones though, dont buy them unless your vid card sucks and you cant get a new one, senns. are the best for headphones

I think the gamer comes with a whole bunch of games. I think it was halo rainbow 6 and tomb raider. I got the A2 ZS(not the gamer edition) and mine only came with rainbow 6 and tomb raider.

yeah it does, i wonder if the hardware is any different though

The hardware is hardly different for most of the Audigy2 cards. Just drive bays, inputs/outputs and games. ;)

oh, i see

well i'm not getting the gamer one then, no need for it
the only worthwile game is halo =D

When I first hooked this dude up, it sounded pretty good, but it wasn't the sound I was hoping for. Everyone, including myself, has different views on how music should sound. The music coming out of my speakers was super crystal clear, but I just wasn't getting the "oomph" that I was hoping for. Well, after tweaking around with the "bass boost" setting, I found my "oomph". The music sounds so good that I could put A1 steak sauce on it and have it for dinner. Seriously, this is a great sound card with a bunch of tweaking options. Big improvement over the SB 5.1 Live! that I replaced it with and, to me, worth the money.
