Thought I'd make a thread on it because there are a lot of people who didn't know it happened, and it's the 75 year anniversary.
There are some pretty disturbing pictures from The Holodomor. They are difficult to find though.
The Ukrainian Genocide Famine (Holodomor)
is one of the least known tragedies of the 20th century...
At the height of the Genocide Ukrainians were dying at a rate of 25,000 per day.
Nearly 1 in 4 rural Ukrainians perished as a direct result.
The Soviet Union dumped 1.7 million tons of grain on Western markets during the Genocide.
Nearly a fifth of a ton of grain was exported for each person who died of starvation.
Over 3,000,000 children born between 1932-1933 died of starvation.
The US Congress 1988 Commission on the Ukraine Famine concluded:
"Joseph Stalin and those around him committed genocide against Ukrainians in 1932-1933".
There were over 10,000,000 victims of
the Ukrainian Genocide of 1932-1933
So even farmers trying to eat their own crops were killed. Starvation was essentially used as a weapon. I also read that there was a lot of cannibalism as a result of this.Stalin ordered that all private farms would have to be collectivized.
By the summer of 1932, 69.5% of all
Ukrainian farm families and 80% of all farm land had been forcibly collectivized.
collectivization and to assign procurement quotas to each Soviet republic.
During the collectivization process, Ukrainian farmers resisted vigorously, often violently, especially when the GPU (Soviet secret police) and militia
forced them to turn their land over to the government. Thousands of farmers were killed and millions more were deported to Siberia to be replaced by
more trustworthy workers.
