I know they are in different price ranges but I gotta get some opinions.
(I'm ignoring rebates)
7900GT 256MB $260
Pros- Less power, 1 slot, 100$ less
X1900XT 512MB $360
Pros- More performance

I thought I had my mind made up, going with a 7900GT. But then I saw Digit-Life's 3Digest for June '06 and it showed these cards compared with the card I have now. While the X1900XT and 7900GT perform really well, the 7900GT does not perform that much better than my ATI X850XT 256MB. I play at 1280x1024 (LCD resolution) and like to use AA/AF if possible. So I'm wondering if I should go with the X1900XT instead.

I'm perplexed. Any opinions?

I'd like to know what CPU you plan to use with it. If it's the upgrade to amd x2 4600+ you were talking about, I'd go for the x1900xt if I had the money to spare. I don't know if you're a fan of SLI, but if you're getting an SLI mainboard you should go for the 7900gt. If you're not satisfied by the performance you can always get another one.

edit: Also, I don't think the extra $100 on a price of $260 is worth it. You are paying about 40% more for, I dunno, 20% extra performance?

Yeah, this will be with the new CPU in a month. Either the X2 4600+ or X2 4200+ and I probably will OC. I don't think I will ever buy 2 graphic cards. I might buy a SLI/Crossfire motherboard but only because of other features and OCing potential.

As I said in my edit, I think the performance/price ratio is the biggest factor here. Mainly because both cards are excellent performers and will run any dx9 game perfectly for the next year. You want the extra performance with a dx10 card. The 7900GT is clearly the winner at the performance/price ratio. I'd go with that one.

I've read too many horror stories about the 7900's, and know 3 people who've had to send back faulty cards. Maybe go for a x1800xt - it seems to offer the best value for money these days. The money you save could go towards a dx10 card sometme in the future.

Given the choice of those two cards, i'd go for the x1900xt.

I've heard nothing but good things about the 7900gt, can you please give a link or elaborate?

I've read the same on bit-tech as well warbie. Seems that a lot of people are having to rma faulty cards.

if you guys have looked around they have rebuilt the 7900s so they dont have those problems anymore

To be honest, I'm not really worried about the card going bad.

You have an X850XT? Is something wrong with it? If not...well an x850xt seems like a good enough card to use until DX10 cards come out.

That is quite the problem!

Normally I would say go with the 7900gt as it has a very good price to performance ratio. However if the gains over your current card are not very noticable then I would suggest waiting until the DX 10 cards come out.

Then again, if you are going to upgrade your whole system to PCI-E and an X2 CPU then you would need a video card anyways, so you should go for the 7900gt again (seeing as you would need it to have a functioning PC).

In the end I think the X1900XT is a little bit too much if you are going to upgrade to a DX10 GPU but if you arnt going DX10 then go for it.

Finally I should mention that I have been looking at the new X1900gt. It seems to give the same performance as the 7900gt and I can get it cheaper then a 7900gt (where I live). It also provides AVIVO (which I really like) and it allows for the use of HDR and AA at the same time (unlike the 7900gt).

Nothing is horribly wrong with it. Just that the X850XT is AGP but I plan to make the jump to PCI-Express with the CPU/Motherboard I'll be getting in a month. Although I do dip quite a bit in BF2. :dozey: And there are a number of games I have to reduce detail to maintain 1280x1024 resolution and smooth framerates.

Aye, that is the situation.

Thats also a good idea. I'll look into it.

the 7900gt's seem to suffer from sudden death syndrome.....they just crap out after a few weeks....

Get a thirdparty 7900GT. eVGA seems pretty good.

Can u unlock the pipelines for the x1900 GT to become like a x1900 XL or smth like that? i noe there is no XL versions for the x1900 series, but will it run faster than the 7900 GT?

If u buy an EVGA 7900 GT, u can get a free game (king kong or hitman). that is like a $30 value. and the gfx card costs like $230. u can sell the game on ebay and make more money!
