SCEA has announced a new 80GB PlayStation 3 console to be released in North America in August, packaged with a copy of the game MotorStorm, for a retail price of $599.

The current 60GB model will retail for USD $499, effective immediately.

Now that is a pretty sweet deal alright. About time and a smart business decision in my book. Makes me wish I had waited a bit, but since you can switch in any 2.5" SATA drive with at least the same speed/cache, I don't really feel limited by my 60GB drive. Maybe this will help them grab a little more marketshare...well, this and MORE AAA GAMES!!!

Source.

**** that!
What about us europeans? HUH!? HUH1?!?!

Wait....what is the SCEA? Is it Sony? And is the 60 gig 499 available NOW and hte 80 gig only in August....I'm reading this right, correct?

I might consider getting the 80 gig soon.

SCEA = Sony Computer Entertainment of America, who have no control over Sonys european branch, which means we might be totally ****ed over with the pricedrop.

oh shit, that sucks. Maybe I can take advantage of it, though! :D

Really? You wanna spend $100 for 20 gigs? You'd be much better off buying a 400GB sata drive for that kind of money assuming you can really pop in any sata hard drive as Victim of science suggested.

I'll be buying a PS3 when the price drops enough over here ... and when some decent games come out.

$100 for 20 gig and Motorstorm...sounds good to me \=

Yup, its a great deal, esp. given what an awesome time Motorstorm is!!

And yes, any 2.5" (laptop size) SATA drive that runs at at least 5400 RPM and has at least an 8MB cache will do fine, just slide the old one out and slide the new one in (and screw/unscrew when necessary). Voila! Bigger and better PS3--I can't imagine filling up a 120GB drive, but if you put movies and music on there, it may be a distinct possibility.

Does the PS3 have USB ports for thumb/external drives?

Oh, I thought the other one also came with motorstorm. But $50 for 20 gigs is still a little high. Then again I'm a cheap ass.

I'd rather buy some new hardware for my compy

if it were $200 less and had games I wanted to play I might consider it ...but this also applies to xbox360

Man, thats a rumor thread and this is a confirmation thread with better info and a more eye-grabbing title. Get it straight next time!!:imu:

*sigh* Should I really have to tell you to READ the thread too?

No. :|

If you don't undertsand why this thread was created in its current form then maybe you shouldn't be reading/participating in it.

This is good news I guess, but it kinda pisses me off that I already bought one  . I figured it would be at least a year before a significant price drop.

The two thread creators butting heads. tsk tsk

I'm probably going to re-evaluate the PS3 market closer to Christmas. See what games are out at that time and see if $499 is still too high to stop me from buying. :p

I am to, but I guess if I'm spending $500, what's that extra $100? :p

It happens. Obviously I think mine is the better thread, mostly because of the title being so informative and attention-getting. :E

And by Christmas, the game library for the PS3 should be doing quite well. Next year is going to be even bigger for them though because that will be when the truly HUGE titles will be hitting on the PS3 and we will be able to see if people will bite even at these price points because of the terrific BIG titles. Should be pretty exciting....

geez isn't the xbox 360 elite cheaper then that?
Yeah, by like $20. But the Elite doesn't have a high-def DVD player built-in, nor does it have wireless connectivity to your home network. It just depends on what is important to you as a consumer. The obvious choice is the PS3 for the value, but it will take more people buying for developers to really start cranking out high quality PS3 titles first because right now the industry standard is to develop for the 360 first and foremost because of the ease of porting to PC and the marketshare the 360 has currently.

That made sense at launch, when the $500 version had 40GB less and was missing a lot of features like wi-fi and the card readers ... but I'd rather just buy the $500 PS3 and then get Motorstorm for $60 (or not), leave the HDD upgrade for when/if it becomes necessary (and get a much bigger HDD).

Oh shit yeah. Let's just hope this trickles into the Australian market, which is just ludicrously overpriced. $999 for a 60gig PS3? Yeah right.

Yea this deal seems kind of odd. You can buy the cheap one and get motorstorm + a brand new 80 gig drive (in addition to the 60 gig) for the same price as getting the expensive system.

Is it that time of month for you or are you always just a dick?

Are you always just a pussy? See, I can do that too.

As to the X360 cuts, it's a bunch of financial analysts speculating how much, which model, and when the cut will take place. It's pretty much agreed that it WILL happen, but no news there. Michael Pachter from Wedbush Morgan is awesome in gametrailer.com's Bonus Round though.

Yeah, it was just analyst talk. But all you have to do is wait for tomorrow. ;)

I was at work, and it occurred to me that Microsoft and probably Nintendo as well do a price cut to match Sony. It surprised me to read this when I got home just now. I was thinking Microsoft might cut the price immediately, or they may wait a couple days/weeks.

I was speculating how much they were going to cut the price. I was thinking $80-$100 for the elite, and perhaps less for the lower models. Percentage wise, if they took 100 of the core, it would be a much greater cut than the PS3 for example.

I was also speculating that the Wii will do a price cut as well.

These price cuts should ensure they keep their positions.

It would be really stupid not to price cut these systems to follow suit, especially since they are the ones making a profit.

In my opinion, Microsoft is going to have to do better than a $50 cut for the premium and elite systems. Microsoft had a good run for an entire year where they could charge what they wanted, but now the price wars start.

If they aren't going to cut more than $50, it would be a good idea to include a good game with the systems.

Wow, smart. I got the shit i should have waited but then i remembered having so much fun playing all the ps2 games i missed on the ps3 upconverted.

Nintendo does not need a price cut, it needs a hardware upgrade.

Yeah, I don't think the Wii needs to adjust it's price. It hasn't even caught up with demand yet.

I won't buy one until they do though, and I'm sure I've got company.

I have heard that it is flying off the shelves, so I tend to agree.

However, a lot can change very quickly in the technology world, as you know, and I think that a price drop for the other two consoles demands that the Wii drop the price in order to keep their pricing advantage that is one of the main reasons it is selling so well in the first place.

Before Christmas time, the price is coming down or I'll be really really surprised.

I've held out this long I probably can make it til a price drop as well. Although those 1, 2, 3 punches (games for the Wii) coming out in the 2nd half of the year are killer for me. I might cave in.

FYI 80GB PS3 version will have limited backward compatibility (software emulation for PS/PS2 like the 60GB version in Europe) So buy 60gb versions with hardware for emulating older systems if you can. ;)
Before the PS3 came out, I remember arguing that having the hardware (the chips of the PS1 and/or PS2 installed in the PS3) was just adding to the cost of the system. Defenders remained adamant that it was actually software emulation, so it wouldn't jack up the price. Well, they were wrong, and it was adding to the cost of the system, at least for US and Japan. Funnily, the EU version is actually more expensive, even though it came late, and came striped of it's PS2 chip. Well, soon they will all be stripped down I'm betting, not just the 80GB announced at E3, but all of them.

Many people - to this day, claim that the PS3 emulates ALL PS1 and PS2 games. Many PS3 owners are claiming that it is pretty good, much better than the xbox 360's xbox emulation, but I have heard that it is actually pretty flaky.

It's just like Sony has done since day one about their PS3. Touting all of these features, and then slowly just removing them. All the way down to emulation backwards compatibility.

Whatever. Sony lies and plays dirty. +

It's not just me either. I just found this; it pretty much sums up how I feel.

This is SO TYPICAL Sony. They have a history of promising more than they can deliver. Remember when Ken Kutaragi promised we could jack into the Matrix with the realistic graphics and power of the PS2?

Sony took great delight in taking XBOX 360 to task for not having perfect backwards compatibility. They promised that they were all about gaming and that backwards compability was something that made the Playstation brand great. Now look at them turn tail.

The conclusion? Sony will lie through their teeth to get their hands on your money. Once they have it, all promises past and present go out the window. They are liars; they are arrogant SOBs. And it becomes more and more clear with each passing day that they care nothing for the consumer or their customers.
:x

Meh. Just have to take what most of what these companies say as marketing. Like when Sony said the AI in Assassin's Creed was only possible on the PS3. Oh great and powerful Cell. And now we know it's being released on the PC and XB360 as well. /sony foot in mouth.
