HIV and Aids is a dangerous threat, I urge everyone to do his or her part in combating this non-discriminatory disease.

HIV Estimate
An estimated 850,000--950,000 persons in the United States are living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), including 180,000--280,000 who do not know they are infected.

AIDS Cases
The cumulative estimated number of diagnoses of AIDS through 2003 in the United States is 929,985. Adult and adolescent AIDS cases total 920,566 with 749,887 cases in males and 170,679 cases in females. Through the same time period, 9,419 AIDS cases were estimated in children under age 13.

Deaths Due to AIDS
The cumulative estimated number of deaths of persons with AIDS through 2003 is 524,060, including 518,568 adults and adolescents, and 5,492 children under age 13.

Yes...always practice safe sex...

Kinda like the couple in my sig.

Theres soon going to be a worrying generation gap on the African continent, especially in the south, because of HIV AIDS. Litterally a whole generation is being wiped out by it...

you forgot syphillis, hepatites, etc.

I don't think I'll do sex at all. I don't see the appeal of it. Being ruled by addicting biochemicals ain't my way of life.

Just be careful. Both partners to get tested, even if you only "fooled around", still recommended.

Overall, an estimated one third of new infections are occurring through heterosexual contact. In the United States and Canada, about 25% of newly acquired HIV infections have been attributed to injecting drug use. Sex between men accounted for 42% of HIV transmissions in the United States in 2002.

In the United States, around half of the approximately 40 000 new infections annually are occurring among African-Americans (12% of the country's population), with African-American women accounting for an increasing proportion of new infections. Many of the women do not engage in high-risk behaviour, but are contracting HIV through unsafe sex with their male partners—a significant share of whom also have sex with men or inject drugs.

Analyzing data from 11 states, a recent US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found that 34% of HIV-positive African-American men said they had sex with both women and men. However, only a small proportion of HIV-positive African-American women reported knowing that their partners also had sex with men. The secrecy surrounding such overlapping risk behaviour seems rooted mainly in the stigma that remains attached to homosexuality. The costs are steep: AIDS is now the leading cause of death for African-American women aged 25–34. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, some 90% of young urban HIV-positive African-American men who have sex with other men are unaware of their seropositive status. Overall, it is estimated that fully one-quarter of the 850 000-950 000 people living with HIV/AIDS in the USA are unaware that they are HIV-positive. http://www.unaids.org/EN/Geographical+Area/By+Region/north_america.asp

This information will make you think twice about having unprotected sex or sharing needles.

"Don't for get your raincoat honey!"

there are 10 million cases of aids in africa, 1/3 the global number

"in sub-Saharan Africa, where there are 5,500 funerals every day for people who have died of AIDS. In Mutare, Zimbabwe, an estimated two out of every five pregnant woman are HIV positive ......In Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe, current estimates show that between 20 percent and 25 percent of people aged 15-49 are living with HIV or AIDS"

I took a Sexually Transmitted Diseases class in college a couple of semesters ago. Some of the effects of STDs are freakin nasty. You want kids to stop being so reckless about having sex? Show them some pictures of an infected penis or vagina. : puke :

i hereby wanna thank all the religious fanatics (including the pope) that are claiming condoms cause aids. I hope they have any idea what they're causing

On the radio today I heard some outrageous figure like 600 people in one country (in Africa, or it could be continent as whole) die every day due to AIDS

a few posts above yours:

"in sub-Saharan Africa, where there are 5,500 funerals every day for people who have died of AIDS."

Sorry, missed that post - but that really is shocking. A waste, really.

yes considering the use of condoms would drastically reduce that number

Condoms is the best invention of mankind, if they only where used more...

This problem was non-heard of 20 years ago and now it’s close to epidemic proportions. Do you think the government should control some behaviors? And if so which behaviors and to what extent?

As bad as it is I hope the government never tries to control certain behaviors. I think they should raise awareness and educate the populace. Unfortunately that is much easier said than done.

Yes, that's much more effective than abstinence.

/me sits back and waits for the link which says even abstinence isn't 100% effective.

Heh, I'd like to see that in the next political drive to prevent the epidemic in Africa- "STOP HAVING SEX! IT'S NOT VERY GOOD".

Even when condoms are supplied they're often ignored, for reasons as pathetic as religion or style. Part of the problem is attitude, not just education or the distribution of the things themselves.

How about "STOP HAVING SEX WITH MULTIPLE PARTNERS! OR YOU'LL DIE!"

:frown: no need to be crass
Well since abstinence simply isnt going to happen, condoms are the only reasonable form of protection. And not one person said condoms are the most effective way of combating aids.

edit-- I guess since you changed your post this is kind of pointless

I changed my post?? Man, my short term memory is going...

I just assumed that you changed the post because the one on top of mine was different! I guess when I assume I make an ass out of me and not you.

:(

I'm writing an essay on this right now, HIV and it's therapies. It's a crafty little blighter.

I've got a friend in Cameroon, Africa. He does the condom campaigning. Gave me a condom shirt. He's a good guy.
Sex in these countries is so promiscuous. So, it spreads like wild fire.

The religious people I think are saying that *sex* causes it, not condoms. In the churches eyes, you're not 'getting around committing a sin' by going "Hey baby, we can't use a condom, that's a sin. Let's get busy with it, Yeah!"

Also this kinda doesn't fit that well in politics.. does it?

yes, because, as we all know, sex is the work of satan, and should only be used for procreation

Well whatever your belief is, it's fine, I was just answering the guy who I quoted, who seemed to think that people were not wearing condoms while having sex because they think it's a sin.

If they are worried about that, they aren't having sex at all. No one doesn't wear a condom because they think it's a sin but has sex.

Of course.. I wasnt having a go at you, just the church :)

Yet another thing to blame religion for basically. Woo.

Although to be fair to certain friends of mine, human stupidity can twist anything into something detrimental or pointless.

Er, well if anything in this situation, abstaining from sex for any reason helps curb the epidemic. I don't believe in pre marital sex, but that doesn't make me a bad person, does it? Or in any way somehow HELPING diseases?

gah.. I was being too general...

omg, if you want kids dont wear a condom,
if you dont want kids use em. simple as that,

religion is ruining the world as it is. lol :p
