A friend referred me to this site for my technical question.

I just purchased a ATI 9800 Pro in lieu of Half Life 2 being released today.

I upgraded from 9600xt where I was able to play Counter Strike: Source just fine.

The problem isn't drivers, I've tried Omega, Catalyst, and even a tweaked version.

I believe the problem may be my power supply, yes I have the card directly connected to it.

The PS in question is a 400W CompUSA brand one, the card requires a 350W power supply to begin with.

Here is my system configuration:

3.0ghz Pentium 4 w/ HT
Windows XP Pro
2GB RAM
36gb 10,000rpm SATA HD (the game and os reside here)
80gb 7200rpm HD
60gb 5,400rpm HD
DVD +/- RW
CD-RW
Three fans
Sound Blaster Live!
as well as a FireWire and USB cards.

Is too much power being sucked from that power supply?

Or is it something else?

Thanks in advance.

Are you getting a VPU recover error? If so, go into your video settings and disable VPU Recovery. I was having the same problem with mine when I got it 3 months ago. Everytime I would load up Doom 3 or Joint Operations it would crash to desktop or lock up after 2 minutes. I went in and disabled VPU Recovery and everything works like a charm.

VPU fix worked for me

the fix above for turning off VPU recovery worked for me... Used to crash every 10-20 mins... changed setting and then played last night for about 6 hours solid... Still an occasional network error, but at least I don't have to reboot or restart CS:S to get round that.
Just to let other 9800 users that this could be a definitive fix.

first time in about a month i've played for more than 20 mins without being dumped to desktop... n1 m8 - i'll give it a longhaul test when next i've got 6 hours to burn ;)

didn't fix it for me - the next day i was back to 20mins a go then crash to desktop, no error msg - nothing in event viewer...

Atleast u get crash to desktop, my system completely halts.

Another fix you ould try is to turn your agp speed down to 4x and make sure that fast write is disabled. This has worked for many other ppl.

the agp speed down to 4x worked for me! the fast writes can stay on. if i stay at 8x the fast writes got to be turned off. well that worked for me

Turn it to 8 and keep fast writes off. IMO that's a better tradeoff.
