9800 Pro, x800 Pro, or x800 Platinum

I have an AMD 3000+
1 GB Corsair XMS DDR 3200 ram

Will the 9800 Pro be enough for HL2 and Doom 3? or should I go all out and get the x800? I don't see the prices coming down in the near future.

hm the x800 Pro may do you not sure if the x800 XT will be limited by your cpu.. also its a real pain in the ass to get hold of one atm

The 9800 pro will be enough, but the X800 will last you a long time. But instead of an X800 pro, how about a 6800gt? It's just as good as the 6800 Ultra and X800XT but onlly $400. I suggest the BFG 6800gt, they overclock them a little and they come with a lifetime warranty.

I second that!!! I've got a X800pro and a 9800pro, and I'm going to replace the 9800pro with a 6800GT... Can't wait.

Any card above 200$ will give you awesome performance in HL2 and D3, except the FX series. Even a 9600 will be able to play HL2 with good detail with all the fancy effects.

Is that an Athlon XP 3000+? I would recommend the 9800Pro for only 200$. You could pay 400$ for one of the other cards but you will get more than enough performance out of that 200$ card. IMO

If it is an Athlon 64 3000+ then I would recommend the X800 Pro as you could get a lot more performance out of the card on that type of machine.
A 6800 GT is a great alternative to the X800 Pro. Just depends what you can find in your area.

Yeah really the 6800GT is right up with the 6800 ultra and x800xt but it's $100 cheaper. And again, the BFG one is awesome.

Well, it's right up there with the 6800Ultra...but in some games the XT really packs a punch and in that case it isn't. It's a great card for the 400$ price point.

In that new IGN article (with almost zero new info) about G-Phoria it says the X800's perform around 30% faster than the 6800's in HL2. I'm sure ATI will tweak their drivers for better Doom 3 performance soon... and nVidia will improve their HL2 performance at or near its release, as well. All of the high end cards are great this time, unlike the last line of GeForce cards.
