9800 problems

Ok i dont know if this has been touched on before but i have a problem with my software for my raedon 9800 pro conflicting with the internal software for half life 2, but only where the brightness is concerned for some reason they are fighting with each other and it ends up going really dark no matter what i do, is this a common problem or is it just my uber crap computer? if anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

it only seems to be localized to my video card brightness all the graphics are working sweet as there is no conflicts with anything other than that, but sys specs are;

windows xp
2.4 gig pentium
512 megs ram
raedon 9800 pro
gigbyte motherboard

i dont know the exact catalyst version that i have they are only about 3-4 months old thou

i had this problem with the old dod as well i had to keep restarting the application untill it just worked on its own

but seeing as hl2 takes longer than old school dod to load i figured there might be a "bug fix" for this as i dontk now if its localized to raedon cards...

I actually also have a 9800 and it seemed as if I was getting something along the lines of the error you described, back when I was using Cata 4.9 or 4.10 (2-3 months old). Screen would get darker all of sudden, ignoring my brightness options. It seems to have disappeared with Cata 4.12, but I have also reformatted recently, so I cannot guarentee that the driver change led to the fix. No harm in trying tho.
