9800pro trails, see through walls, jumpy

i have an ATI Radeon 9800 pro that has given poor performance with HL2. 1024x768, high or med. settings, (whatever is recommended by the game). It's basically smooth, but objects trail when I look around with the mouse and sometimes I can see through walls in close spaces. I have tried the card on 2 systems:

before: Athlon XP 1800+, now: Athlon 64 3500+
Gigabyte MOBO......................Asus A8V Deluxe
1GB Generic PC2100...............1GB (2x512) Corsair VS PC3200
both setups using DX 9c, Catalyst 4.12, and a 480w thermaltake PSU.

does this sound like driver problems? could my card be bad? soon I am going to get a new hard drive and try with a fresh OS, driver, and game install.

Will I be able to reinstall HL2 on a new machine? I have the retail box. any suggestions?

If you tried the card in two systems and got the same problem, then chances are it might be a bad card. And yes, you will be able to reinstall HL2 if you have the retail version. Just use the same steam account you registered it to and you're good to go.

thanks for replying. don't think a fresh hard drive format, OS, and driver install might be the solution? it's the same hard drive from my 1800+ setup filled with years of old drivers and a registry mess.

hmm. oh boy. i hate returns....

i need to do my research on best buy's over 30-day, yes-receipt, video card return/exchange policy.
