Hi all,

now here is the story. I remember watching the original E3 presentation of HL2 (which led to a rather large puddle of drool to accumulate at my feet for some reason, go figure). Now, every single section of that demo was amazing, but the one that really dropped my jaw was when Gordon shot down the Combine Gunship and you saw it crash through the cars. I mean just looking at the physics, the cars being pushed away as the gunship prows through them . . ., well you know the feeling.

Now, a long long time later, I'm actually playing HL2 for the first time and waiting for that sequence (praying to god that it wasn't cut). Now, god answered my first request, but Valve kinda spoiled it, by making the gunship explode in the air (rather crappily I might add) and coming down in pieces.

Well, I was dissapoined, but liked the game enough to play it through 3 more times. Now on the third go through, I think God felt sorry for me for some reason, and allowed me the pleasure that Valve took away from me. All the other gunships exploded normally on that go through the game, but one, and as fate dictates, it is the same one that caused that mighty jaw drop in the original E3 demo, didn't explode. Even further, and to my great cheers, it fell rather realistically to the ground smashing the cars this way and that (which made me wonder why Valve made it explode in the first place). Needless to say, if armaggedon happened right then, I would have been happy to retire from this world.

So there you have it, my friends. Just another small story about HL2 and how it enriches my life everyday. It truly was the right bug and the right place at the right time.

PS: Here are some screenshots, unfortunatly I was too stunned to take them while the gunship was actually diving down (and upon reload it exploded normally).

PPS: You might wonder why I took the time to write this fancy tale, which could have easily been faked using GarryMod (hopefully my high post rating and the cute cat beside my name can persuade you of my honesty, plus my total inaptitude at GarryMod). Well there is a simple reason, there is nothing good on TV and nobody is on MSN. Simple enough, ain't it.

It will explode if it isn't over land thats all.

There infact was a topic already on this.

I wonder if a really smart person know of a console command or something that makes it so the airships always crash? It'd definetly be cooler in my opinion...

This is actually something that the level designer wires up in the game. There is an entity that works as a target, guiding the gunship to it, whenever it dies. I've played with this myself, and it does seem finnickey, so I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't actually work the first time you played. I would say it happens the correct way 8 outa 10 times. If you decompile that map, you can actually see how this is all setup :D

I think it exploded my first time through but made it the second.

it looks like the screenshots have HDR effects in them...didnt Garry's Mod 8 have a bit of HDR???

if not, sweet pics mate

All gunships have always exploded for me. And I've gone through many times.

No, that's bloom, not HDR.

yea i went onto garrys mod just before and noticed bloom not HDR, but it does look like it has a bloom effect on it. thats why i am not sure. even though he says it is not done on garrys mod....

There is a Bloom mod he may have... And my coast route looks like that without anything extra.

That particular one you are indicating has always landed intact for me. I took great pride in telling all my friends about that bit when I got to school the next day.

I think it's actually "flat land" and not just "land", in my experiences if it hits a point such as a hill's peak it'll explode.

It really never happened to you riomhare? I got it to crash the first time due to the fact I was trying to reanact the BINKs.

its always come crashing down at me every single time. it's really cool, but its no miracle

Due to your eloquence you have managed to avoid everybody shouting 'stupid noob!' like they did at the last guy who posted about this happening to him. :p

Pretty cool when that happens. Quite useful as well because you can go right up to the gunship and examine it cloesly.

OK, then let me be the first to say it:

STUPID NOOB!

Also, that quote of his makes me think he has no life whatsoever. How sad.

Quiet troll.

That last sentance of yours makes me think you have no manners nor concept of being nice to people.

Dark Tower's supposedly a good series of books, too.

You accuse him of having no life and yet you still continue to post crap to other people, pfft, how ironic ...

Sorry for the "noob" comment, I keep forgetting how big a deal computer games are to people these days, seeing as how I'm thinking of doing away with mine. People buy virtual items on Ebay for their games, KILL for them, DIE for them by playing too long and dropping dead of DVT.

I didn't mean it was sad, that's not really the word - it's more like SCARY.

"Supposedly" and "good" are not the right words to use there. Let me rephrase for you:

The Dark Tower (one novel, many different parts) IS a phenomenal book. If you enjoy reading, especially if you enjoy reading Stephen King, or just have a taste for the bizarre, pick up the The Dark Tower series. It is a big commitment, but you will never, ever read anything like it again.

Well, when you're working with Half-Life, it's not really a computer game. I would say it's more a piece of art....an interactive piece of art.

I love compuiters and computer games. They are my passion/hobby. I am not insane though. I would never buy virtual items (for WoW or something), kill or die for computer games. Some people are just idiots. But, please, don't insult someone because they love computer games.

Oh, and to the OP, great post. I take Half-Life as seriously as you, and probably enjoy just as much as you. Cheers!

DVT = Deep Vein Thrombosis

It's also called "Economy Class Syndrome", where inadequate seating on aircraft for long-haul flights can cause health problems or even death due to blood clots in the legs.

Some people sit down long enough to play computer games to possibly get the same thing.

Fair enough. :)

Ok . . ., should I even reply to this rather horrible insult.

PS: Next time you use somebodies quote to deduce that person's life, at least know where the quote is from and what it means. Just trying to make your insults in the future less pathetic.

PPS: Thanks for all the guys that actually defended me, but my life (however absent, as Foebane says) keeps me away from being able to post too frequently.
