A City in Ruins – C-17 Resistance

HL2 fan fiction by Urbanebula

Prologue.

Captain Lewis was an English soldier who was respected by millions of people around the world after he led nearly two hundred civilians out of City 17. He and his men had fought against masses of Combine forces in order to rescue as many civilians as they could. This story was written using the contents of his wartime diary.

“This is my story. It is a story dedicated to the brave civilian resistance fighters who stood up against the infamous Combine. It is a story for the soldiers who fought and died along side me. This is my story for my brothers.”
---Taken from Capt. Lewis’ journal---

In the first few days of the event, when the news started blasting in through the TV and radio, nobody had ever heard of City 17, the Combine or the Citadel. These words meant very little to anyone.

City 17 was a city located in Eastern Europe and was known only by its residents and surrounding villages. The reason? City 17 was a prison city. Guards patrolled the streets night and day, scanners searched everybody for threatening behaviour and a large building called the citadel towered above the skyline for the entire city to see. It was a truly unbelievable place.

Of course resistance was inevitable. The first campaign for the City 17 citizens was to get in touch with the American government, who were also unaware of this metropolis. They accomplished this mission using surprise tactics and stealth. The combine didn’t know what hit them. The resistance took over an under protected radio station on the outskirts of the city. Needless to say the combine where immediately mobilized to cope with this threat. The squad was eliminated shortly after the transmission was made but the government had already started to deal with the problem. The plan was laid out in three sections.

Operation Silent Fury: Two of the best government agents Agent GF and Agent BC were sent to City 17 undercover. Scientists were also moved in afterwards.

Operation Dark Cloud: Spy planes scanned the city and Combine key points were bombarded by the air force.

Operation Guardian Angel: The British Army was informed of the increasing threat and troops were moved into the city to pull out any survivors.

Of course during all of the resistance activity something very peculiar had started happening. The Citadel had begun to move northbound into the centre of the city, smashing through anything in its path with its huge teeth. Smoke poured from its top as it churned and ground up the ground that it passed over. It was a tremendous sight from the distant countryside locations.

The trucks had pulled up in a nearby village. Captain Lewis was standing at the end of the road. The country spread across the horizon at either side until meeting the outskirts of the city. Gunfire could be heard across the open land. Through his binoculars Lewis could see muzzle flash coming from every window. The resistance had definitely kicked up a fuss with the combine. He turned back to his squad who were kneeling in front of the truck. His force was made up of eight other men. Privates Keen and Morgan were support gunners both armed with L86 light support weapons. The five infantry soldiers were privates Rowe, Smith, Bennett, Phillips, with the radio, and Sergeant Cooper who were all armed with standard issue SA 80s. Finally the squads sniper private Miller carried a L96 British sniper rifle.

“Ok lads.” He said, “This is it. 2nd Company Omega will come in from the south so check your fire. Keep it clean and professional and we should be in and out in no time.”

“Captain,” called Phillips, “Base called in and says Omega Company is in position.”

“Ok, I guess I should give you the outline of the plan. As you well know our orders are to clean out the city. Kill any combine on sight! Any rebels that you see must be assisted to safety. Now remember they are civilians so they won’t be fit to military standard. Stick with them until they are secure and don’t leave anyone behind. Lets move. Board the truck and gear up.”

The men hopped up into the rear of truck and Lewis climbed into the drivers seat, sergeant cooper into the passenger’s.

“You think we can pull this off sir?” Cooper asked. His hands were shaking.

“Don’t wind yourself up Cooper. It’ll affect your aim if you get nervous.”

The truck moved off onto the country road. The poor suspensions made the men feel every bump in the road. Bennett was the next one whose nerves kicked in. He leant forward and vomited onto the metal floor. He leant back and wiped his lips.

“Sorry,” he muttered to the others “I can’t help it.”

“Don’t worry. It’s fine.” Phillips was sitting next to him and patted him on the back. “We’ll be fine.”

“Two minutes.” Cooper’s voice echoed from the cab. “Get ready!”

Next part...here goes.

Chapter 1

All of the British soldiers sent into Eastern Europe didn’t know what to expect. In the beginning Combine was just a word. They hadn’t seen these men, they didn’t know any of the city’s layout and they didn’t know how many days they would be fighting for. Most of them didn’t even know each other’s names! People were split up from their friends, shoved into trucks and were driven off to one of the villages around the city. Every squad was made up of two trucks. These trucks would then be split up again. Eventually there was one truck in each of the forty villages around city 17. When the attack was called every truck headed for city 17.

“If the enemy is small we shall trample them! If the enemy is huge we shall topple them! If the enemy is weak we will crush them! If the enemy is strong we will be stronger!”
---Speech from Major Carter given to British troops shipping out to Europe during the city 17 campaigns---

The men reached under their seats and each lifted out a helmet. After they were put on the men took out their charms, lucky symbols and religious items. The truck was silent for about a minute whilst all the men finished their prayers.

“Thirty Seconds.” Came the second call. “Load up!”

The men simultaneously reached into the ammo crates suspended above their heads. They pulled out a couple of clips and stashed them in their backpacks and side pockets. Finally they all clicked the safety of their weapons and got ready to dismount the truck.

“Ten!” The captain could be heard loading up his gun. The men all gave each other a reassuring nod and leaned towards the back canvas. The captain opened his door slightly, in order to leave the truck quickly. “Three…Two…One!”

The truck pulled to a near instant handbrake stop, hurling a few men back into the front wall of the truck’s cargo area. They climbed forward again and rolled out of the back of the truck. They were three hundred metres from the city’s outskirts. It was much more visible from here. The buildings around the outside were beaten and worn despite the fact that the aerial bombardment was much closer to the centre of the city. The gunfire could still be seen and heard towards the city centre. The men formed a line formation and all dropped to a prone position. They all scanned the horizon for movement. Nothing.

“Ok lads.” Said Lewis “Lets move up to the houses on the left. Rowe and Smith move to the right hand buildings.” He was interrupted by the sound of some very close gunfire from towards the south. Phillips’ radio burst into life.

“This…Omega Company. We need immediate…south. These things…coming out…the bloody walls…trying…latched on to Johnson’s head or something!”

“Slow down!” shouted Phillips “We’ve got to much interference.”

“Too many…can’t hold them off. Do you read me…repeat…do…” The radio went dead.

“What the hell was that all about?” Yelled Smith “What the hell have they go us into?”

“Calm down Smith!” Cooper ordered. “Listen!”

The gunfire was becoming less frequent. Screams echoed across the country. The four remaining sets of gunfire became three. Another scream, two sets of gunfire, then one. Finally everything was silent.

“What happened?” asked Morgan.

“I don’t know!” Yelled Phillips “I can’t reach them on the radio. The ridge is interfering with it or something.”

“They’re probably dead.” Said Miller

“Watch your tongue kid!” barked Lewis. “We will radio them again when we reach the meeting point. Move out.”

The men walked on further towards the City’s outskirts. Once they finally reached them they were tired, hot and overall a little worried about Omega’s transmission earlier. This area was a once bad neighbourhood. Graffiti lined the walls and floor accompanied by the occasional bullet hole. This was all several years old. Since the construction of the city’s CBD everyone from the outskirts would have moved in towards work. The team stuck to the walls of buildings and covered in every alleyway they came across. They stopped at an opening in the buildings. The sign read: “Canal Delivery Point. This way.” The arrow pointed into a small lane, which was covered by a group of overgrown trees. There was very little light but water could be heard from the other side. Lewis turned to Cooper and the others.

“Ok boys, we can hear the canal so it can’t be that far through here.”

“I hope your right.” Said Rowe.

The men stepped into the darkness one by one until they were all crammed into the narrow tree cave.

“Bloody hell it’s cramped in here!” moaned Bennett.

“Oh shut up soldier” Cooper called back.

“Wait!” said Morgan stopping dead in his tracks.

“Move it you Muppet!” shouted Bennett.

“Sush…” came Morgan’s reply.

The squad stayed still and listened. Some very loud thumping noises could be heard from behind them. They grew louder and louder.

“What the…” said Cooper

“Quiet!” Shouted Morgan.

The thumps were incredibly close now. They sounded as though they were right on top of them. Suddenly something crashed through the tree canopy. Leaves and braches covered the fallen thing. The men drew closer. It sprung into life and sent the debris everywhere. Morgan’s eyes were filled with dust and he froze, clutching his face with his hands. The object was floating above him and was staring down with its green eye. This suddenly flashed to red and the object disappeared through the roof of foliage.

“What was that?” Screamed Morgan. “I can’t see!”

“Calm down Morgan!” yelled Keen “We don’t know what it was!”

A huge spindle like shape crashed through the canopy. All of the men fell backwards with shock.

“What the hell?” yelled Rowe, climbing to his feet. He stopped instantly with his eyes fixed on Morgan. “Oh my God!”

A massive needle type object had impaled Morgan. He was suspended halfway up it and his blood was streaming out onto the floor. He looked up for a second and then his head dropped back, lifeless. The pointed object rose up and disappeared through the canopy. Rowe stepped forward slowly towards the gaping hole in the green roof. He looked up and stepped back quickly with a gasp.

“What is it?” asked Bennett

Morgan’s body smashed back down through the hole. His bones cracked as he hit the floor and blood splashed the walls and Rowe. Rowe stumbled forward in disbelief, looking at his former friend. His chest had been replaced with a gaping hole with a diameter of about 12 inches. The alley floor could be seen beneath him and blood had already started to collect in every crack of the concrete. The thing was still above them. A strange whirring noise had started to build up. It was getting louder and louder.

“That sounds bad.” Said Keen

“Run!” shouted Lewis “Get to the canal!”

The men climbed over the fallen braches and passed by Morgan’s body. They headed for the light at the end of the tunnel. They reached the canal and stepped out into the light, shielding their eyes from the glare. They looked back and were shocked by what the saw. The light was bending inwards towards the head of a huge 30-foot insect like creature. Its three long legs rested idly on either side of the small alley from which the men had just exited.

“Get down!” yelled cooper

The men dropped just as soon as the energy mass was released. A beam struck the canal water behind them. There was a tremendous shockwave and the canal shifted upwards and was thrown across a great circular radius. It smashed down around the men like a thick dirty rainstorm. The creature scanned the area as the mist settled. The men didn’t move. They were playing the cowardly game of waiting. The creature scanned them again and turned and stumbled away between the houses.

“What the hell was that thing Captain?” a voice muttered.

“I don’t know Smith.” He shifted and checked his weapon over.

A boat was approaching them. The figure standing at the head of the boat beckoned them over.

“Hurry!” he called with a thick Austrian accent “Get on, get on!”

“Just a second came a second serpentine voice.” A man in a blue suit holding a briefcase submerged from the boats cabin. “I wish to speak with these men.”

The men shifted uneasily as the man climbed down out of the boat onto the wet path. His face was pale and wrinkled, his eyes were as cold as ice and his mouth was stretched into an unflattering smirk. This guy must have been some sort of higher power within the city.

“What do we do captain?” asked Rowe.

“Hold, lets see what he wants.”

The man walked to Lewis and raised his hand his hand towards him, gesturing a friendly “handshake and hello” greeting.

“Missster Lewis,” he hissed, “So glad you could…make it.” He stammered, a speech impediment perhaps. “We have been watching you for some time. We need your help and it would have been a shame to have lost you in the hands of a combine scout.”

“Scout?”

“The strider,” said the Austrian “The combine use them to survey the city.”

“That thing was a reconnaissance unit?” yelled Cooper. “We lost a man to that damn thing!”

“Yesss, I know. Most tragic” his face showed no emotion “We have lost many over the past five days. Striders are the least of your worries. Get on. We have much to discuss.”

The men climbed onto the boat. The Austrian struggled to pull the men up onto the deck while the suited man merely stood and watched. Once all the men were aboard the Austrian was taken to one side by his superior. They were discussing something and the man was using the Austrian’s personal space to push him over to the handrails. He quickly pulled a 9mm berretta and fired a shot into his chest. The blood shot out of his wound and out of his back, splashing the deck and rails. He fell backwards over the railing followed by a loud splash. The soldiers slung their weapons into their hands and aimed for the man’s head. A definite one shot one kill zone.

“Freeze you bastard.” Shouted Keen, clicking the catch back ready to fire.

“Hush,” the man’s voice was now raised “Lower your weapons. He was a murderer. He escaped from the prison during the Xen invasion and I said he could live as long as he brought me to you. That time has passed and he would have slowed us down.”

“Wait. What’s a Xen?”

“We have much to discuss. Follow me.” The man drifted across the deck and down into the cabin.

“What the hell is going on? Who is this guy?” asked Cooper

“Guess we have to trust him for now.” Said Lewis. He walked up to the cabin door and climbed down the ladder. The rest of the men followed him below deck.

phew...need sleep. :x

Very nice but complicated ( I am not English or English speaking... )
Also quite dramatic....feel bad for those men....Get something funny in it to cheer us up :D

Overall impression: NICE :D:D:D:D

Cooper is the comical one. He's got a thing or two up his sleeve to lighten the mood later in the story. Glad you like it.

lol

That was a bad bad film. Shame on the british horror industry.

Good thing they fixed it with "28 days later." That would make for an interesting HL2 mod.

Jonesey. looked at your site. Nice PC mate, and the rifle? Wow. I only got a crappy 177 custom b2. If that means anything to anyone.
