why do such songs have lyrics about tragic events that little children sing (or used to sing)?

such as...

ring around the rosie, pocket full of posies...

that song represented the black death or bubonic plague in europe that killed 1/3 of its population. i believe ring around the rosie meant some sort of typical symptom on the skin, pocket full of posies meant keeping some flowers to your nose to avoid the smell of rotten death among many people, ashes ashes we all fall down might've meant death or the burning of the bodies...

it's all sort of vague but it does make some sense.

the same thing with london bridge is falling down and others.

heh what about the racist childrens song "Jimmy Crack corn"

"Jimmy crack corn, and I don't care
Jimmy crack corn, and I don't care
Jimmy crack corn, and I don't care
My master's gone away"

its a practical joke.

you look back and say, "shit thats pretty ****ed up right there. little kids are singing this?"

i wonder wtf jimmy crack corn and i don't care means.

Jimmy crack corn, and I don't care.

could it mean:

Jimmy has developed a way of smoking crack with corn? And obviously no one gives an eff?

lol, jk.

what's up with that song anyway?

cracked his skull open, jimmy is the slave master I believe, in the song.

LOL ...hehhe

he's talking about himself:

Jimmy (the singer) crack corn (shuck corn: to take off it's husk)

"I dont care" cuz " the masters gone away"

he is a slave on a corn plantation shucking corn all day, and since his master's not at home he can "crack" the corn and eat it

crack = shuck?
and he refers to himself in the third and first person on a single line?

There have always been adult messages and themes in many childrens songs and tales. Just look at the Grimm Brother's fairy tales.

but the song is older than seinfeld :\

now you're just making my brain hurt with your logic! ;)

"Jimmy crack corn and I don't care.
Jimmy crack corn and I don't care.
We built this city on rock and roooollll.
Something something day!"
-Homer Simpson

Its just tradition
Children havent always been sheltered
Red ridinghood used to be eaten at the end
Cept now we always want happy endings
So we just dont explain what the songs mean
To the children, and they're happy and sing

And more recently
Spongebob Squarepants
and
Invader Zim
and, occasionally,
Fairly Odd Parents.
Any fool knows the best kids' TV appeals to the childishness of the young adult.

And "Ring-a-ring-a-roses" was specifically about the
Bubonic Plague.

Not sure about "London Bridge is Falling Down" though - maybe about the Great Fire of London?
